Nikon Updates L-Series
In an overhaul of its digital camera line, Nikon launched two updated cameras to entry-level point-and-shoots, the Coolpix L15 and Coolpix L14. The new Nikon cameras carry improved face detection and the new Expeed image processor.

August 30, 2007 – Included in Nikon's eight camera announcements today are the Coolpix L15 and Coolpix L14 point-and-shoots. The cameras feature improved face detection and Nikon's new Expeed image processor. The 8-megapixel Coolpix L15 will retail for $179.95 and the 7-megapixel L14 for $149.95 when the cameras hit shelves next month.
"With the COOLPIX L14 and L15, users of any experience level can capture great images without having to master complicated features or controls," said Nikon Coolpix General Manager Marketing Bill Giordano in a company press release today. "These cameras are great for casual snap-shooters who want to take great pictures, easily."
As the follow-up cameras to the Coolpix L12, introduced in February, the Coolpix L15 and L14 are notably less expensive. The L15 is $30 less and the L14 $50 less than the near-$200 L12. The two new cameras feature an enhanced version of the L12's Face Recognition function, which detects faces quicker, according to the release. As the base models in the Coolpix line, the L15 and L14 detects up to 5 faces in a scene, versus other advanced Nikon models that can detect up to 12 faces.
The Nikon L15 and L14 also feature a new image processor called Expeed that promises improved noise reduction at high ISO settings. The Expeed processor uses enhanced signal-to-noise ratio that preserves image detail. While the older L12 had a maximum range of up to 1600 ISO, the L15 and L14 top out at 1000 ISO.
Like the L12, the Coolpix L15 and L14 are fitted with 3x optical zoom lenses. The L15 carries Optical Vibration Reduction included on the earlier model to compensate for camera shake. The L15 possesses a 2.8-inch LCD screen and the L14 shrinks to a 2.4-inch monitor.
Other features include Nikon’s In-Camera Innovations, a set of three built-in features including the Face-Priority function, Red-eye Fix, and D-Lighting, all borrowed from the L12. The Coolpix L15 and L14 each have 15 scene presets. The cameras are compatible with AA batteries.
