May 7, 2007 – Along with the announcement of the PowerShot S5 IS today, Canon unveiled its latest point-and-shoot model, the PowerShot SD850 IS Digital ELPH. The new 8.0-megapixel SD850 IS comes with a Digic III processor, a new scene mode, and an Auto ISO Shift feature. The SD850 IS wil

l retail for $399.99 when it becomes available in June.

"The PowerShot SD850 IS Digital ELPH camera continues the strong tradition of Digital ELPH imaging excellence and eye-catching style," said Canon senior vice president Yuichi Ishizuka of Consumer Imaging Group in a press release today.

The successor to the 6-megapixel SD700 IS model, the new PowerShot S850 IS makes upgrades in megapixel count and to the processor. The S850 IS comes equipped with a Digic III processor-updated from the Digic II on the previous model-which promises faster start-up time, auto focus, shutter response, and extended battery life. With the new processor also comes Canon’s Face Detection technology that automatically selects focus, exposure, and flash for up to nine faces in a scene.

The camera retains the 4x optical zoom lens from the SD700 IS. Like the rest of Canon’s IS models, the PowerShot S850 IS has optical image stabilization. Canon also includes a new one-touch Auto ISO Shift feature that increases sensitivity to reduce blur in low-light situations without the use of a flash. Other improvements include a 2.5-inch PureColor LCD with anti-glare coating that resists fingerprints and scratches.

The Canon S850 IS has 18 scene modes including a new Creative Light Effect scene mode that turns bright spots into heart and star-shaped bursts. The camera also comes with six movie modes including a Time Lapse video setting and built-in Red-eye correction. The Canon SD850 IS accepts Li-ion batteries and includes a 32MB SD card in the box.
