November 13, 2006* - Nikon Australia Pty Ltd opened its doors this month in Sydney, Australia and will act as a subsidiary headquarters under parent company Nikon Corp.

"In response to the continued digitization of imaging products, we have established this wholly owned sales subsidiary based on our determination that a stronger marketing, sales, and service presence is required to further expand our business in Australia," stated a Nikon Corp. press release on Oct. 17.

Starting operation on Nov. 1, the Australian company has approximately 40 initial employees and a starting capital of $4 million AUD (equivalent to $3.01 million USD) provided in whole by the parent company. Nikon will also add "strategic marketing and effective advertising" effects in the land down under.

Nikon imaging products have already been available in Australia since 1959, distributed through retailer Maxwell Photo Optics. Even with the new Nikon Australia presence, Maxwell Photo Optics will continue to be a retailer for Nikon products, according to the release.

Nikon Australia senior manager of Sales and Marketing James Murray said that filling back orders before the holiday season is the highest priority, according to the Photo Marketing Association.
