September 16, 2004 - Olympus announced a 3.2 effective megapixel point-and-shoot camera, the Olympus D-535 Zoom, would be available in October 2004. For about $150, the user can easily capture pictures with the 3.4 x 2.5 x 1.5-inch and 4.9-ounce digital camera, designed for easy operation and quality images at a relatively low price.
'The D-535 Zoom is specifically designed for ease of operation while allowing new users to enjoy the various functions and many advantages of digital photography to the fullest,' said Olympus America Inc. Product Manager Naoki Tai.
The D-535 Zoom contains a 38-114mm (equivalent) lens, allowing the user to focus on objects as close as 0.8 inches away. An additional 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom are available when necessary.
The entry-level camera simplifies complex operations by having separate buttons for shooting and playback and even has a help function that explains each function and modes purpose. A flip of the dial offers the user six preset shooting modes: program auto, portrait, landscape, night scene, self-portrait and movie mode. This simplification may create some limitations on the Olympus D-535 Zoom, such as its automatic white balance restriction.
The Olympus D-535 Zoom can shoot movie clips at a resolution of 320 x 240, which is standard for a camera in this price range. These clips, as well as still images, can be viewed on the cameras 1.5-inch. 130,000 pixels LCD monitor.
The Olympus D-535 Zoom makes everything even easier by running off two AA batteries, so finding batteries on the road is an option. The camera uses an xD Picture Card, but also has 12MB of internal memory. It is PictBridge compatible and includes USB and AV cables.
The Olympus D-535 Zoom will be available in October 2004 for about $150.
