If you thought the camera announcements were all but wrapped up after CP+ 2016, Panasonic has a surprise for you. The company just announced its latest entry-level mirrorless camera, the all-new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 (MSRP $799.99 with kit lens).
Centered around a new Venus Engine and a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, the GX85 doesn't stand out from the rest of the mirrorless crowd. But we had a chance to use one for the last week and we're absolutely smitten with Panasonic's pint-sized powerhouse. Slotting in just behind the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8, the GX85 is compact, easy to use, and comes with a litany of high-end features like dual image stabilization, 4K video, and 4K Photo modes.
You can read our full review of the GX85—including lab results—for the complete breakdown, but it's safe to say that Panasonic has a real winner on its hands. Thanks to some artful corner cutting, the GX85 provides a very competitive feature set compared to similar cameras like the Sony Alpha A6000 and the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II.
Panasonic's real leg up comes from the inclusion of 4K video as well as dual image stabilization, which combines stabilization from both the body and lens (where available) to produce razor-sharp images. It's a feature we first saw on the aforementioned GX8 and it's just as good here.
The GX85 also comes with a boatload of 4K features. Videographers will of course appreciate the ability to shoot in 4K, but there's a few surprises in there, including 4K live-cropping video to take advantage of a higher shooting resolution to simulate panning and zooming. Additionally, the GX85 comes with all of the 4K Photo features found on previous cameras, letting you shoot 4K videos and pluck out 8-megapixel frames after the fact.

If you want to pick up a GX85 for yourself, it'll be available at the end of May 2016 for $799.99 in black or silver with the same compact 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens found on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM5.
