March 16, 2005 — Pentax announced yesterday that it will showcase a medium format digital SLR camera at the Photo Imaging Expo in Tokyo, which begins tomorrow. The American subsidiary of Pentax presented the Pentax 645 Digital as an announcement, with the brief press release reading, "Pentax Corporation will unveil the first Pentax 645 Digital medium-format camera." However, the Japanese subsidiary of Pentax called the camera a "Conceptual Mock-Up."

The tentative Pentax Digital 645 will have a large Kodak CCD imaging sensor with 18.6 total and at least 18 effective megapixels. The camera will also have an AF mount that allows compatibility with all existing Pentax 645 interchangeable lenses. According to the press release, the 645 Digital will be "showcased under glass" at the show.
