November 10, 2006 - Sharp Corp. has announced an "industry high" 12MP interline 1/1.7' CCD sensor, according to a Japanese press release on Wednesday.

Designed for compact digital cameras, the Sharp sensor (RJ21Y3DA0ET) measures 1/1.7 inches. While most compact point-and-shoots in the market top off at 10 MP, the new sensor supersedes the 10 MP standard in compacts and even in some DSLR cameras.

Because of the high sensitivity conversion, the Sharp sensor can effectively capture images usable despite hand shake and moving subjects, according to the press release.

Sample shipments of the 12 MP Sharp sensor will be distributed starting Nov. 30. Mass produced shipments will begin in January 2007, according to the release.
