There’s nothing like the anticipation of waiting for that first sip of coffee or tea in the morning. Whether you meticulously steep your tea leaves or enjoy a cup of coffee from a pour-over dripper or French press, an electric kettle can get you your daily caffeine fix quicker.

The right electric kettle can certainly heat your water, but some models come with more advanced features. Higher-end kettles offer digital temperature controls, automatic keep-warm functionality, and even water temperature recommendations based on the type of tea you’re drinking.

Our team in the U.S. tested 14 of the top electric kettles on the Candian market to determine which ones deserve a spot in your kitchen.

1. Cuisinart PerfecTemp CPK-17

Credit: Reviewed / Jackson Ruckar

The Cuisinart's pre-set temperatures for different types of tea are a nice bonus to overall stellar performance and attractive design.

This electric kettle proves that looks can be deceiving. While it’s not fancy, the Cuisinart PerfecTemp performs exceptionally well for the price. It offers six preset heat settings between 71°C (160°F) and 100°C (212°F) for steeping different types of teas with intuitive buttons. Select your desired temp, and within five minutes, your water will be ready.

Need hot water throughout the morning? The machine will ensure your water stays hot with a handy keep warm mode, which automatically resumes, even if the kettle is removed from the base. But don’t worry, it won’t boil if the water level gets too low. It’s easy to use, quick to heat up, and comes with a three-year warranty. That’s why it earns our top spot.

2. Hamilton Beach 1.7 L Cordless Kettle

Quick to boil and easy on the wallet, the Hamilton Beach was an easy pick for Best Value.

When it comes to performance, this Hamilton Beach kettle shines. It can easily bring one litre of water to a roaring boil in as little as 4 and a half minutes!

Simplicity is key here. This model lacks multiple temperature settings. Instead, it will turn itself off once it senses the water has reached a boiling point.

If you lack counter space, this is certainly one to consider. Its compact design makes it ideal for small homes or condos. It’s also ultra-affordable. But don’t let its low price point fool you. It performs just as well as some of the more expensive models on our list.

3. OXO Brew Adjustable Temperature Electric Pour-Over Kettle

This kettle takes the prize for the fastest boil time on our list. It takes a little over four minutes for OXO’s gooseneck-style kettle to boil water, and it will turn heads while doing it. The stainless steel finish gives it a sleek and attractive look, plus it has a silicone grip on the lid to prevent you from burning yourself.

Gooseneck Kettles are ideal for pour-over coffee. This model makes it easy to control pour speed, allowing you to slow it down to almost a drip without fear of spillage. It also features a built-in timer to help you keep track of the pour-over brewing process. The warm cycle will keep water at the ideal temperature for 30 minutes before automatically turning it off.

The straight handle can make this kettle feel a bit heavy when pouring over a long time, but it offers some cushion to help.

4. Breville 1.8 Liter Electric Kettle

This is one of the most expensive kettles of the lot, but it’s easy to see why—it pulled ahead of the pack in every one of our tests.

This model takes the prize as being the most expensive on our list, but it’s easy to see why when you look at performance and features.

It’s extremely intuitive to use, with five clearly marked and programmable temperature settings. It also has a 20-minute keep-warm feature for those who may want a second cup. Boiling temps can be reached in just over five minutes, and we love the way it alerts you that your water is ready with a series of beeps rather than quietly turning off.

The Breville 1.8 Litre Electric kettle was close to taking our top spot in the ranking but fell short as it’s hard to justify the higher price.

5. OXO 1.75 Litre Glass Electric Kettle

If you want a glass kettle that offers quick results, this may be your best pick.

A glass kettle that offers quick results, this OXO kettle places high in our boil tests, bringing water to a rapid boil in just over five minutes.

The sides of this kettle have convenient and easy-to-read ounce and millilitre markings for precise measuring, and the stainless steel bottom remains cool to the touch when removed from the 360-degree swivel base.

It’s important to note this kettle is on the tall side. At over 30 cm (12 inches), you will want to make sure your cabinets have enough clearance for this to fit under.

6. Cosori 1.7 Litre Glass Electric Kettle

Watching this kettle heat water is almost mesmerizing. A blue light illuminates the kettle base as it starts to bubble and boil, putting on a mini light show as you wait for your cup of coffee or tea.

Other than that, this model is quite basic. There is no temperature control; the only choices are on or off. The kettle will shut off automatically once a roaring boil has been achieved, but you can always shut it off sooner, depending on the size of bubbles you see through the glass. The boil-dry safety feature will also ensure the kettle doesn’t heat up when it’s not filled with water.

7. Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle

If you wanted to buy an electric kettle on aesthetics alone, you can’t go wrong with the Fellow Stagg.

When it comes to looks, the Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle has the competition beat. In fact, you may have noticed it on a Kardashian Instagram post not too long ago.

This model is by no means the fastest to bring water to a boil. It took on average around seven and a half minutes to bring 13°C (55°F) water to 100°C (212°F). That’s the longest of any kettle we tested. It also doesn’t beep to notify you when it’s ready. That being said, this kettle will hold the desired temperature for a full hour once your water has boiled.

The control knob allows you to set the kettle to your desired temperature in either Celsius or Fahrenheit, and it doubles as a timer.

Inexplicably, the tiny LCD screen can also be used to play Wormy, a game similar to Snake on an old cell phone. Hey, I guess that’s one way to pass the time as you wait for the kettle to boil.

8. Capresso H20Plus 1.5 Quart Electric Kettle

This curvy, teapot-reminiscent kettle is one of the most attractive and space-efficient of the lot, but doesn't stack up in usability.

This curvy teapot-reminiscent kettle is both attractive and space efficient. It only has one heat setting, but it boils water quite efficiently.

The light that lets you know the kettle is in preheat mode is difficult to see, and there is no notification to let you know the water has finished boiling, other than it shuts itself off. The lid can also be difficult to pop off, and the steam from pouring hot water can make it quite slippery, making it tricky to remove.

9. Miroco 1.5 Litre Stainless Steel Tea Kettle

The Miroco impressed us with its incredibly fast boiling times.

A basic kettle with a simplistic design, the Micro stainless steel kettle has a BPA-free plastic exterior with stainless steel interior. A button on the top makes popping the lid open easy, and the base is the same size as the kettle, which reduces the bulk of the overall footprint.

Performance-wise, the kettle did have one of the fastest boil times, but the spout proved problematic. You must be careful when pouring hot water as it tends to quickly gush out, making it difficult to pour into smaller cups.

10. Fellow Corvo EKG Electric Kettle

While it was slow to boil, if you’re looking for a beautiful kettle for your countertop, rest assured that this is still a solid option.

This kettle from Fellow is very similar to the Stagg model. It even features the same easy-pour ergonomic handle and LCD screen for temperature control and Wormy game.

Unfortunately, this kettle is the slowest of the batch when it comes to boil times, clocking in at almost eight minutes. Sure, it’s faster than a stove-top kettle, but one would expect more out of an electric model.

The Fellow Corvo does have one thing going for it, and that’s its looks. This beautiful kettle sure does look great on the countertop.

11. AmazonBasics 1 Liter Stainless Steel Portable Electric Hot Water Kettle

This kettle is cheap—and you can tell.

This kettle can be summed up in one word. Cheap. The plastic base is so lightweight, it doesn’t sit flat on its own, and the cable needs to be fiddled with to get it to feed out properly through the side. Every time you pick up the kettle, the base twists and moves on the countertop, which becomes annoying.

The poor build quality is a shame as it is one of the best performers for boil times. It also has a see-through window to show you how much water is left.

12. Ovente 1.5 Liter Glass Electric Kettle

While we don't hate this model, it's nothing special.

Nothing special about this kettle. It’s an Amazon best-seller, but that could be due to its fun colour options and price point.

The kettle is slow to boil with no temperature control, and a screen at the top of the spout sticks out at an odd angle, making it difficult to fill at the sink.

On the plus side, it does have an anti-slip grip and heat-resistant handle.

Get the Ovente 1.5 Liter Glass Electric Kettle at Amazon Canada for $34.18

13. Secura 1.7 Liter Electric Kettle

Secura 1.7 Liter Electric Kettle

The Secura may not be much to look at but it performed very well in our tests.

Looks are not its strong point. The Secura electric kettle is the ugliest of the batch, thanks to its cheap, plastic construction. On top of that, it’s quite large, for only holding 1.7 litres of water.

That being said, this electric kettle performs well, boiling water in under five minutes. Not only is it fast, but it also stays cool to the touch, making it perfect for busy kitchens with children. Just make sure you have space in the cupboard to hide it away when it’s not in use, as you won’t want to keep it out on display.

14. Bonavita Variable Temperature Digital Electric Kettle

Bonavita Variable Temperature Digital Electric Kettle
Credit: Bonavita

This is one of the most attractive kettles we tested, but offered middling performance.

This stylish kettle is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. From a design point, it’s quite attractive. The stainless steel kettle looks nice enough to leave on the counter, and it’s lightweight, but it only holds one litre of water, and the lid is light and chintzy and makes a horrible scraping sound when placed and removed.

You can set your temperature on this model, but for a one-litre kettle, it sure does take its sweet time to heat up. And the gooseneck design is misleading. While most gooseneck kettles have accurate pours, this model consistently missed our teacup in testing.

Sadly, the good looks of the Bonavita electric kettle aren’t enough to save it. There’s a reason why this one is at the bottom of our list.
