When it comes to breakfast, sometimes the simplest foods are the best and is there anything simpler than a perfectly brown slice of toast? While on the surface, toast is straightforward, finding the right toaster is a bit more complicated. There are hundreds of toasters available on the market today. While many of them pack some pretty desirable bells and whistles, not every brand excels at crisping up bread slices and toasting Montreal-style bagels.

If you’re unsure where to even begin buying a two-slice toaster, we’ve got a few suggestions that you might want to consider. We tested several toasters at our labs in the U.S., and here are the best ones you can get in Canada right now.

1. Breville Die-Cast 2-Slice Smart Toaster

The Breville Smart Toaster is an absolute pleasure to use.

The Breville doesn’t come cheap, but its even toasting and solid build, plus some special features, make it an absolute pleasure to use. It’s the little things that make this toaster stand out amongst our best toasters. You push a start button to start toasting, rather than pushing down on a lever. The start button? It's also a cancel button, allowing you to interrupt the toaster's cooking cycle if you feel that your bread has been roasting for a little too long. The bread lowers and rises in its extra-wide slots with a theatrically slow speed. You select your setting by sliding a button on an LED-lighted control.

The Breville has a few clever little features that set it apart from the rest. The “Lift & Lock” button lets you have a quick peek without interrupting the timer, and the “A Bit More” button lets you fine-tune your toast. Even the removable crumb tray on our best toaster was considerately designed.

The Cusinart 2-Slice Compact Toaster is our vest value pick.

Despite its rock-bottom price, the Cuisinart 2-Slice Compact Plastic Toaster is beautifully designed and performs well, making it our best value choice. It was very fast, serving up dark toast in under 3 minutes, so it's a great option if you plan on hosting brunch any time soon. While it did a beautiful job of toasting bagels, the slots were a bit too snug for a fat bagel or thick-cut bread.

The Oster TSSTTRGM2L toasts good and looks good.

If you want to capitalize on the trend for black stainless steel, consider the Oster Black Stainless Collection 2-Slice Toaster. Naturally, we wouldn't be writing about it here unless it was also great at toasting bread at all shades. The Oster TSSTTRGM2L does a good job of toasting items evenly, but when you’re toasting small items, you will have to use the toast lift to grab them without risking burnt fingertips.

The Zwilling 2-Slice Toaster is pricey but worth it

A newcomer in the toaster world, the Zwilling 2-Slice Toaster is pricey but worth it if getting evenly sliced bread at every setting is important to you. You can also depend on it to pop up batch after batch of identical toast.

While it is heavier, wider and higher than the typical two-slice toaster, its slots are wide enough to easily accommodate a long slice from a French country loaf.

The KitchenAid toaster is beautifully designed and offers consistent toasting results.

Available in glossy red, black, or silver, the KitchenAid 2-Slice Toaster with High Lift Lever is stunning, and it did an amazing job of toasting evenly and quickly. The Smeg 2 Slice Toaster is a gorgeous yet pricey addition to the kitchen.

If you're looking for a conversation piece, the Smeg 2-Slice Toaster is your pick. It comes from the Italian company's '50s Retro Style line. 8. Haden Dorset 2-Slice Toaster

While it has its quirks, we were impressed with this Haden Dorset toaster.

If you’re looking for stylish ‘50’s design without breaking the bank, the Haden Dorset 2-Slice Toaster is for you. It hails from a British company and is solidly built. The rotary settings dial and analogue display on the front further cement the retro aesthetic. The Dorset does a good job of evenly browning toast evenly, but bread toasted on medium came out darker than we expected. Using the bagel setting is also likely to cause considerable confusion. In the Haden, when you toast bagels, you insert them into the slots with the cut side facing out rather than in—perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Brits drive on the other side of the road?

This Black & Decker toaster toasts evenly but takes up a lot of counter space.

The Black and Decker 2-Slice Toaster T2659B is on the chunky side, so it may take up a little more countertop space. Fortunately, it really shines at toasting evenly. Bagel fans be warned, unlike most other options on this list, on the bagel setting, it toasts both sides.

While it doesn't stand out, the AmazonBasics toaster is simple and affordable.

The Amazon Basics 2-Slice Extra Wide Slot Toaster is another inexpensive generic-looking toaster with just so-so performance. While it may be lacking in the looks and performance department, it has frozen and bagel settings, and the slots are wide enough to easily hold half of a huge Montreal bagel.
