What is Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings about?

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduces the character of Shang-Chito the MCU. Shang-Chi stars Simu Liu in the title role, with Awkwafina, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Florian Munteanu, and more. The film is the first Marvel film to star an Asian lead and a principally Asian cast. The film follows the story of young martial artist Shang-Chi, who carries his family’s legacy—from his criminal father Wenwu (Leung), leader of the Ten Rings organization and the true Mandarin, to his powerful mother (Yeoh)—to his new life in San Francisco. But eventually, his past comes back to find him.

The trailer for the film shows scenes from Shang-Chi’s youth as a budding warrior and focuses on the Ten Rings themselves, with Wenwu noting that Shang-Chi must become strong enough to carry the rings. The trailer reveals elements of the power of the rings, as well as the mysterious magic that Shang-Chi’s mother wields (and a brief glimpse of a dragon). Notably, the trailer was also confirmed to feature Benedict Wong, reprising the role of Wong, a familiar face to Marvel fans and perhaps an indicator that the film will tie into the events of the next Doctor Strange installment.
