Amazon Fresh vs. Whole Foods vs. Instacart: I priced the same groceries on all three

Same 18 items, three very different receipts.

If you're a Prime member, you've probably noticed Amazon nudging you toward its grocery options every time you open the app.

Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods both deliver, both come with Prime perks, and both promise to save you a trip. Then there's Instacart, the service a lot of us were using long before Amazon got serious about groceries.

So which one costs less once you factor in fees and minimums? I built a real weekly shopping list and priced it on all three for the same Manhattan address (ZIP 10001) on the same day in October 2026—and the most expensive option cost $18.30 more than the cheapest.

The results: what the same basket cost on each service

Amazon Fresh came out cheapest at $86.07 with delivery, and Whole Foods cost the most at $104.37. Instacart landed in between at $96.93, but that's before its service fee, which only shows up at checkout. Here's how the totals broke down.

Not every brand was available everywhere, and that's a story on its own. Whole Foods steered me to its 365 store brand for four of the name brands on my list, and it stocked only organic Honeycrisp apples, which cost more than three times what Fresh charged. Fresh needed just two swaps.

I priced all three carts within the same hour so a flash sale on one site wouldn't tilt the results.

Who can use each service

Your ZIP code, not your membership, decides which services can deliver to you.

Availability depends on your ZIP code more than your membership, so check before you build a cart.

Amazon Fresh is Amazon's own grocery storefront, with produce, meat, dairy, and household staples delivered the same day in covered metros. It's now delivery-only: Amazon announced in January 2026 that it was closing its physical Fresh stores, converting some into Whole Foods locations and shifting the brand to online orders. Enter your ZIP on the Amazon Fresh page to see if you're covered.

Whole Foods Market delivers through Amazon in select ZIP codes. You shop it at Whole Foods' Amazon storefront or in the Amazon app and schedule a delivery or free pickup from your local store.

Instacart works differently. It isn't a store; it's a service that sends a personal shopper to local grocers, from Costco and Kroger to Aldi and Wegmans. It's the most widely available of the three, but there's no Prime tie-in at all. You won't find Whole Foods there either: Whole Foods ended its Instacart partnership in 2019 because of its ties to Amazon. Instacart's own paid tier, Instacart+, is a separate $99-a-year membership.

Delivery fees, minimums & tipping

Fees are where the cheapest-looking cart can quietly become the priciest. Each service charges differently, so here's what you'll pay before groceries.

Amazon Fresh Whole Foods (via Amazon) Instacart
Membership Prime ($139/year) Prime ($139/year) None required
Instacart+ is $99/year
Delivery fee $9.95 under $100
Free at $100 and up
$9.95 per order
$0 on $25+ with Unlimited Grocery Delivery ($9.99/month or $99.99/year); free pickup
Varies by store and window
$0 on $10+ with Instacart+ ($35+ at Costco)
Service fee None None Yes, a percentage of your order
Applies even with Instacart+
Order minimum None None
$25 for free delivery with the add-on
$10
Tipping Optional Optional Suggested at checkout

My Fresh cart landed at $76.12, which is $23.88 short of free delivery. If you're close to $100, it's worth adding pantry staples you'd buy anyway, since every dollar up to the threshold cuts into the $9.95 fee.

The service fee and tip are where Instacart gets you. Amazon doesn't add a service fee and treats tips as optional, while Instacart charges a service fee on every order and pre-fills a suggested tip. Since Instacart's subtotal was already $20.81 higher than Fresh's, any tip widens the gap further.

If you order groceries every week, Amazon's Unlimited Grocery Delivery add-on pays for itself fast: It costs about the same as one Whole Foods delivery fee a month.

Prime-member grocery discounts

This is where Prime earns its keep. Instacart has nothing comparable for Prime members, so the Amazon options get a head start.

Amazon Fresh: Look for Prime-exclusive pricing on select items and digital coupons you clip before checkout. And don't forget Subscribe & Save for nonperishables like peanut butter, pasta, and cereal. Adding five items to one delivery day gets you 15% off, which beats most grocery promos.

Whole Foods: Prime members get an extra 10% off storewide sales (alcohol and gift cards excluded) by scanning the Whole Foods or Amazon app at checkout. There are also Prime-member deals on seasonal favorites and rotating Tuesday and Friday markdowns on staples like rotisserie chicken and ground beef. If your list lines up with the week's sales, that can close some of the gap with Fresh.

Instacart: No Prime perks. You can link a store loyalty card for member pricing, and Instacart+ waives delivery fees on orders of $10 and up, with a 14-day free trial before the $99 annual charge kicks in.

How fast each service delivers

All three options offer same-day delivery in most covered areas.

All three let you schedule a delivery window in advance and offer same-day delivery in most covered areas. Instacart is often the quickest for last-minute orders, with deliveries in as little as an hour in many areas. Amazon's windows tend to book up on weekends, so ordering the night before is the safer play.

Substitutions, freshness & customer service

Price only matters if what arrives is what you ordered.

Substitutions: Instacart lets you chat with your shopper in real time and approve swaps as they happen, which is a significant advantage. Amazon lets you set substitution preferences per item before checkout, but you'll usually find out about a swap only when the bag arrives. As my test showed, brand availability varies a lot by store, so confirm that a service carries your must-have brands before you rely on it.

When something goes wrong: Amazon handles missing or damaged items through Your Orders, while Instacart refunds go through the app's order help screen.

Which grocery delivery service is best for you

Best for budget shoppers: Amazon Fresh

Amazon Fresh

Amazon Fresh had the lowest total in our test, even with a $9.95 delivery fee.

It had the lowest total by a wide margin, beat both competitors on most items, and charges no service fee. It's the default weekly pick for most Prime members.

If you already pay for Prime, Amazon Fresh is the easy place to start, since the delivery perks come with a membership you're likely using anyway.

Not a member yet? Try the Amazon Prime 30-day free trial and run your own basket test before you pay a cent.

Best for organic and specialty shoppers: Whole Foods

Whole Foods

Prime members get an extra 10% off Whole Foods sale items.

It cost the most overall, but it was cheapest on items like Rao's marinara and Chobani yogurt, and the extra 10% off sales for Prime members can trim the total if you shop the deals. Just be ready for 365 store-brand swaps on some name brands.

Best for last-minute needs and store loyalty: Instacart

Instacart delivers from stores like Wegmans, but Prime perks don’t apply.

It's the most widely available and often the fastest, and it's the only way to get delivery from stores like Wegmans. You'll pay for that convenience in markups, fees, and tips, and Prime gets you nothing here.
