At the 2015 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, there were plenty of brands showcasing high-end handle-free cabinet designs, but one company took the concept further than any other. German cabinet-maker Bauformat brought an entirely handleless kitchen—one that included a very special guest.
Back in 2013, Miele debuted the Knock2Open dishwasher at IFA Berlin. Designed to fit into the kind of luxury kitchens where everything is built-in and panel-ready, this futuristic machine was the first to ditch the handle entirely. To open it, you simply knock twice and sit back as it slowly, smoothly tips open under its own power.
It’s the perfect companion for Bauformat’s sleek, near-featureless designs—an exercise in ostentatious minimalism. Thanks in part to this design compatibility, Bauformat has partnered with Miele, using its appliances in its showrooms and promotional materials.
While the Knock2Open dishwasher has thus far been exclusive to the European market, Miele USA reps suggested that it will soon hit American shores—perhaps as early as April of this year. So if a handle-free kitchen sounds like a good idea to you, keep Miele and Bauformat on your radar.
