A good cup of coffee doesn't have to come from the café down the street. Our panel of experts selected the specialty coffee brands below for the qualities that matter most when you choose to brew at home rather than visit the nearest Starbucks.
These nominated specialty coffee brands offer thoughtful sourcing policies, distinctive flavor, a clear mission, and coffee that holds up. These are better than the average cup of Dunkin' hot. Our list includes long-established roasters, neighborhood favorites with loyal followings, and a few brands that stretch the definition of a coffee company.
Now it's your turn. We need your help deciding which of these brands deserves the title, so read through the nominees and vote for the one you'd reach for first. Wondering what other things our readers care about? Check out all our Readers' Choice Award winners.
Voting period ends on Nov. 4, 2026. We'll announce the winners on Nov. 12.
Nominee 1: Blk & Bold
Blk & Bold started in Des Moines, Iowa, with a simple premise: Every bag sold should do some good. Co-founders Pernell Cezar and Rod Johnson built the Black-owned brand around a pledge to direct 5% of its profits to nonprofits serving youth in need, and the company earned B Corp certification in 2020.
Our panel acknowledged that coffee purists may weigh flavor differently, but the brand's social impact is too significant to overlook. The lineup covers light, medium, and dark roasts, plus cold brew, K-Cup pods, and organic loose-leaf teas.
It's also easy to find, with Blk & Bold stocked at thousands of stores, including Target and Walmart. Shop the full lineup on Blk & Bold's website.
Nominee 2: Bones Coffee Company
Bones Coffee Company takes a playful approach to specialty coffee. The family-owned roaster in Cape Coral, Florida, offers more than 30 flavored coffees with names like S'morey Time, Salty Siren, and Strawberry Cheesecake, each packed in a boldly illustrated bag that stands out on the shelf.
Our experts singled out that pairing of dessert-inspired flavors and eye-catching artwork as the reason the brand makes a daily routine feel less routine. Beyond 12-ounce bags of whole-bean and ground coffee, Bones sells single-serve cups, canned coffee, decaf, and sample packs for anyone who wants to try several flavors before committing.
Licensed collections tied to Star Wars and The Nightmare Before Christmas add appeal for collectors. Browse current flavors at Bones Coffee Company.
Nominee 3: Clevr Blends
Clevr Blends isn't a traditional roaster, and that's part of why it landed on this list. The Santa Barbara, California, company makes instant SuperLattes: powdered drink mixes that combine a base like organic instant coffee, matcha, or chai with oat milk powder, a probiotic, and functional ingredients such as ashwagandha and lion's mane mushroom.
Our reviewers named it the pick for wellness-minded parents looking for a calmer start to a hectic day. The Coffee SuperLatte contains about 50 milligrams of caffeine per serving, and the lineup also includes a caffeine-free option, the turmeric-based Golden. Preparation is simple—just add hot water or milk and stir. See the full range of blends on Clevr's website.
Nominee 4: Counter Culture Coffee
The independently owned roaster Counter Culture Coffee describes its beans as traceable from seed to cup and publishes transparency reports detailing its purchases from producers. That seriousness about sourcing stood out to our panel, which also flagged the company's B Corp certification as a plus for eco-conscious shoppers.
The lineup includes year-round blends, light-roasted single origins, decaf and half-caff options, and subscriptions for home brewers. Counter Culture also runs a network of training centers in cities from Durham and Atlanta to Chicago and Los Angeles, where it teaches brewing skills to coffee professionals. Explore the current offerings on Counter Culture's website.
Nominee 5: Death Wish Coffee
Death Wish Coffee founder Mike Brown created these beans for drinkers who want maximum kick from a single cup.
Our experts called it a natural fit for the parent who hasn't had a full night's sleep in years. The lineup has grown well beyond the original bag to include medium and espresso roasts, pods, instant coffee, cold brew, canned lattes, and flavored options.
In 2018, the company even developed an instant coffee for astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Find the full range at Death Wish Coffee.
Nominee 6: Equator Coffees
Equator Coffees has been roasting in Marin County, California, since 1995, when partners Helen Russell and Brooke McDonnell launched the company. Today it's a certified LGBTQ+-owned business, a B Corp since 2011, and a past winner of Roast Magazine's Macro Roaster of the Year award.
Our panel highlighted the mix of social responsibility and recognition, adding that the coffee itself delivers complex, layered flavor. Equator sources directly from more than 50 producers in 20 countries and offers single origins, blends, espresso, decaf, and organic ready-to-drink cold brew. Coffee drinkers in Northern California can stop by one of its neighborhood cafés, while everyone else can order beans or start a subscription through Equator's online shop.
Nominee 7: GoodBoyBob
GoodBoyBob began as a Santa Monica coffee shop in 2017 and has since expanded to Venice, Manhattan Beach, and even Hudson, New York. The draw is a coffee program that goes deeper than the average neighborhood café. Alongside its classic house blends, GoodBoyBob offers single origins and a rotating Rare line featuring coffees such as a Tanzanian Gesha, as well as a Rare Coffee Subscription for home brewers.
Our reviewers noted the crowds its high-end coffee draws across Southern California, as well as a food menu anchored by the Rolex chapati, the shop's take on an egg breakfast burrito, served with housemade hot sauce. The result is a spot where breakfast gets as much attention as the espresso. Order beans or find a location on GoodBoyBob's website.
Nominee 8: Heart Coffee Roasters
Heart Coffee Roasters has been part of Portland, Oregon's coffee scene since 2009. Owners Rebekah and Wille Yli-Luoma run the roastery and two cafés in the city, both intentionally Wi-Fi–free to keep the focus on the cup. Heart's roasting style aims to bring out the fruit-forward flavors and natural sweetness of each coffee, which it sources through direct relationships with producers in countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia, and Guatemala.
Our experts described it as a strong, satisfying cup that's especially rewarding brewed as pour-over, and the brand's V60 and AeroPress brew guides make that easy to try at home. Along with single origins, Heart offers its Stereo seasonal blend and a Roaster's Choice subscription through its online shop.
Nominee 9: Intelligentsia Coffee
Intelligentsia Coffee first opened shop in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood in 1995. It has since grown into one of the more widely available specialty coffee brands, with cafés in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Austin, and Seoul. Direct Trade sourcing and a single-origin lineup remain central to its approach.
One of our panelists called it their introduction to specialty coffee, singling out the espresso—namely Black Cat Classic Espresso, a syrupy, sweet blend the company has served since its earliest days.
Our panel also noted that Intelligentsia offers a balanced, sweet cup for everyday drinking, and that its single-origin options reward exploration. Shop beans and brewing gear on Intelligentsia's website.
Nominee 10: La Colombe Coffee Roasters
La Colombe Coffee Roasters got its start in Philadelphia in 1994 and still roasts there today. Founded by Todd Carmichael and JP Iberti and now owned by Chobani, the company is known for both its bagged coffee and its canned Draft Latte, a frothy, ready-to-drink latte.
Our panel highlighted Corsica, a dark roast with notes of baker's chocolate, red wine, and spice that puts a refined spin on a traditional cup. Panelists also called La Colombe an approachable specialty brand that translates well to home brewing, which makes it a practical entry point for anyone upgrading from supermarket coffee.
The company operates cafés in cities including Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Browse blends and Draft Lattes on La Colombe's website.
Nominee 11: Nam Coffee
Nam Coffee brings Vietnamese coffee to Los Angeles with a direct line to its source. Founder Vince Nguyen, who grew up in Vietnam and worked at his mother's coffee stand in Saigon, sources Arabica and Robusta beans from a family farm on Langbiang Mountain near Da Lat, with no cornstarch or chicory added. Blends range from 100% Robusta to a 70/30 Arabica-Robusta mix, plus a decaf, and the shop sells traditional phin filters for brewing at home.
Our judges described the result as smooth coffee without the jitters. They also highlighted Nam's two LA cafés, in East Hollywood and Chinatown, which serve creative drinks like salted cream coffee and matcha ube. Shop blends and brewing gear at Nam Coffee's website.
Nominee 12: Onyx Coffee Lab
Andrea and Jon Allen founded Onyx Coffee Lab in Northwest Arkansas in 2012, and the company has since drawn attention well beyond the region. Onyx team members have won multiple U.S. Barista Championship titles, including Andrea Allen in 2020, and the company is a certified B Corp. It also publishes pricing and trade data for its coffees as part of a broader push for transparency in how roasters buy coffee.
Our judges see Onyx as a serious specialty roaster with a clear sense of purpose, and one noted that its packaging looks good enough to leave out on the kitchen counter. Beyond coffee, Onyx sells tea, chocolate, matcha, and brewing equipment, and it runs cafés in Bentonville, Fayetteville, Springdale, and Rogers. Shop the lineup at Onyx Coffee Lab.
Nominee 13: Press Coffee
Press Coffee has been roasting in Phoenix since Steve Kraus and Tram Mai founded it in 2008, and it has blossomed into 19 cafés across the metro area. Single-origin coffee is central to the brand, with new releases arriving on the first and 15th of each month from countries such as Ethiopia, Colombia, and Guatemala.
Our panel praised the smoothness of those single origins. In 2024, the company acquired its own farm on the slopes of Panama's Barú Volcano, which now supplies its Press Estate coffees and a Gesha-focused Press Reserve line.
Blends like Twitch Espresso and Early Edition round out the lineup for everyday brewing. Order beans or find a café on Press Coffee's website.
Nominee 14: Stumptown Coffee Roasters
Stumptown Coffee Roasters opened its first café in Portland, Oregon, in 1999, inside a former beauty parlor called Hair Bender—the name founder Duane Sorenson later gave the brand's signature blend, which has notes of citrus, dark chocolate, and raisin. Stumptown adopted a Direct Trade model in 2003, and the company says more than 90% of its 2024 coffee purchases came through those relationships.
In our panel's view, it's a classic of American specialty coffee, and one that's now readily available across the country. Reviewers also pointed to its organic options, such as Holler Mountain, for drinkers who want a bright, dependable morning cup.
Stumptown has cafés in Portland, New York, and Los Angeles, plus a location in Kyoto. Shop beans on Stumptown's website.
Nominee 15: Torque Coffee
Torque Coffee is a San Diego roaster built around transparency. Co-founded by husband-and-wife team Andy and Nanelle Newbom, the company sells single-origin coffees from named producers in countries such as Guatemala, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Burundi, and it publishes what it pays for them. Torque says at least 20% of the price of each bag stays in the country where the coffee was grown.
Our panel was drawn to the brand's distinctive single-origin beans and its female co-founder. For those who prefer blends, Torque offers a set of Compositions, including Honey Drop and Cocoa Drop. In 2024, the company opened its first café and roastery inside a 1930s Art Deco building in San Diego's City Heights neighborhood. Browse current coffees at Torque Coffee.
Nominee 16: Verve Coffee Roasters
Colby Barr and Ryan O'Donovan founded Verve Coffee Roasters in Santa Cruz, California, in 2007, and it remains independently owned. Its original blend, Streetlevel, is a medium roast with notes of clementine, red apple, and honeycomb—a bright, citrusy cup that our experts framed as high-energy coffee for a busy household.
Another panelist added that Verve suits people who want to taste what's in their cup. The company's Farmlevel program focuses on direct trade and investment in coffee-growing communities, and Roast Magazine named Verve its 2024 Roaster of the Year. Verve operates cafés in Santa Cruz, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles, as well as several in Japan. Shop beans and subscriptions on Verve's website.
