Described to us as a “sound system first, cooler second,” the stylish Kube is one of the prettiest portable Bluetooth speakers we’ve ever seen. The hybrid device made its debut at this week's Digital Experience 2015 in Las Vegas, pumping out 110-decibel output that could be heard from across the convention hall.

(In fact, it was so loud that event staff threatened to boot Kube's staff from the venue.)

The impressive sound output comes courtesy of Polk Audio marine-certified speakers built into the Kube. The unit has a Bluetooth range of 50 feet and a battery that allows for up to 20 hours of continuous music playback. Prefer a wired connection? There are ports around back for that, too.

If the sound doesn’t turn heads, the Kube’s elegant design certainly will. It sports a distinctly modern, minimalist aesthetic—all curved edges, with a white and gray color scheme and bold brown handles. LEDs illuminate the 33-quart interior, USB charging and power inputs are hidden away behind covers, and the five buttons that control playback are simple, responsive, and provide satisfying tactile feedback.

The Kube feels sturdy and solid, weighing in at 20 pounds. We were told the shell is made of aluminum and a coated polymer to make the entire unit durable enough for outdoor use. Kube reps claimed it's also waterproof and bulletproof, but we’re a little skeptical about that last bit.

Kube has started taking pre-orders after its debut, with an estimated shipping date of May 2015. The asking price? Yep, there's the stumbling block: It's a steep $1,099.

Still, we can envision the Kube furnishing a modern home, inside or out; it's so good-looking that its portability and durability are essentially secondary benefits.
