Prescription sunglasses are a valuable (and stylish) accessory for people who require corrective lenses to see clearly, but also want to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays while outdoors. However, not all prescription sunglasses are created equal, and choosing the right pair can be a daunting task due to the overwhelming number of online glasses and sunglasses retailers. How do you even know what brands offer sunglasses with custom lenses?
That's where we come in. We tested almost a dozen sunglasses retailers to find out how reliable online glasses sites are, from selecting frames to trying the glasses on virtually to entering prescriptions to actually wearing the glasses outside. We tried well known brands and some smaller names to see what would stand out, and Zenni came out as our number one pick for the best prescription sunglasses. If you're shopping on a budget, we recommend Firmoo (available at Firmoo) as the best affordable option.
Whether you're looking for a stylish new pair of prescription sunglasses or simply want to ensure that you're getting the best quality and protection from your new frames, we’ve got you covered. Before you purchase, be sure to check your vision insurance and your HSA to see if you can use your pre-tax dollars for your perfect pair of prescription sunglasses. We found several sites that can score you the best prescription sunglasses for your needs so you can enjoy your time outdoors with clear vision and protected eyes!
Zenni sunglasses were the best we tested.
Firmoo makes excellent prescription sunglasses for a low cost.
Eyeconic had an incredible selection of sunglasses to shop from.
Roka sunglasses are perfect for the sports lovers.
EyeBuyDirect had the best website experience of any brand we tested.

How We Tested Prescription Sunglasses
The Tester
I’m Liv, a Reviewed contributor. I’ve been wearing lenses for almost 20 years—all kinds of glasses, contacts, and sunglasses. I typically prefer contacts for my lifestyle, and I don’t love that wearing glasses means my eyes are unprotected from the sun. So, when offered the opportunity to test out prescription sunglasses—a product I’ve wanted to try but couldn’t financially justify—I was overeager. I put these sunglasses to the test to (literally) see how they held up to the light.
The Tests
We started by selecting frames from each online retailer to see which ones offered the best options for prescription sunglasses. This included assessing how many frame styles, shapes, and sizes were available, as well as what customization options were offered. If possible, we tried the glasses on virtually to see how they looked and “fit.”
Next, we entered our prescriptions and ordered the glasses to test their quality and durability in the real world. We tested them outside in different lighting conditions to see how well they performed and if they provided the necessary UV protection. We evaluated the comfort and fit of each pair to see which ones were the most comfortable to wear, even dancing around with the glasses on to see if they slipped or pinched anywhere. We also placed each pair of glasses on a flat surface to ensure that the arms of the glasses both rested evenly and didn’t wobble which would indicate poor construction or damage during shipping.
In addition to these formal and informal tests, we factored in the price of the frames at the time of purchase (if you’ve ever bought prescription frames you’ve likely noticed the price creep up as you customize and select lens options) as well as accessories that arrived with each pair of prescription sunglasses.
What You Should Know About Prescription Sunglasses
Here's what you need to know before you buy prescription sunglasses.
Prescription sunglasses can feel like a must-buy if you're someone who wears glasses daily and enjoys spending time outdoors. They tend to be more expensive than regular sunglasses, but they're tailored to your prescription, meaning you can enjoy all your favorite outdoor activities while still protecting your eyes from UV light or messing with contacts. Here are some frequently asked questions about prescription sunglasses.
Where to Buy Prescription Sunglasses
You can shop for prescription sunglasses from many online retailers, including ones that you probably already use to shop for glasses online. The best retailer we tested was Zenni, but if you're looking for prescription sunglasses on a budget, we recommend Firmoo. If you enjoy sporting outdoors, Roka is our top recommendation.
You can also shop for prescription sunglasses from Walmart.
How Much Are Prescription Sunglasses?
Prescription sunglasses tend to be more expensive than regular sunglasses, as the lens have to be made specifically for you. Here's how much each pair I tested cost:
| Zenni | $107 |
| Firmoo | $39 |
| Eyeconic | $362 |
| Roka | $300 |
| Eyebuydirect | $65 |
| Warby Parker | $195 |
| Blenders | $92 |
| LensDirect | $144 |
| GlassesUSA | $118 |
| Pair Eyewear | $159 |
Are Prescription Sunglasses Covered By FSA Plans Or Health Insurance?
According to the IRS, you may be able to use your FSA to cover prescription sunglasses. You can use these funds for contact lenses and eyeglasses as "needed for medical reasons." Double-check with your eye doctor if you're unsure.
Are Prescription Sunglasses Worth It?
In our opinion, prescription sunglasses are absolutely worth it for outdoors lovers who enjoy spending time in the sun, whether you're an avid kayaker or an afternoon walker. They're also helpful for anyone who needs vision correction and works outdoors. They can help make life just a little bit better for prescription wearers and provide a less clunky alternative to other options.
