One of the brands I was aware of going into testing is Warby Parker. I had never tried anything from the brand before, but the experience aligned with most of my expectations. One of the perks about Warby Parker is that it offers a try at home option so you can test lenses at home for free to get an idea of the style, shape, and size on your own head. I took advantage of this offering and was pleased with how quickly my sample frames arrived and how easy they were to return thanks to a return label that was included with the shipment.

When it came to testing prescription sunglasses, my experience dimmed. There is a good range of glasses to shop from, but there are fewer customizations for the lenses themselves, though you can select from several lens colors, prescription types, and lens materials. I liked that most frames could have prescription lenses added opposed to shopping a subset of the sunglasses.

The Warby Parker sunglasses came with a cleaning cloth and a hard shell case; both of which are useful though I hoped for more accessories because the brand is so popular. The glasses are just as they look online, but they fit my head tightly, causing discomfort and a headache if I wear them for more than an hour. I’d probably select a wider frame going forward, but the narrow and normal sunglasses I tried on all fit well.

When I selected my frames, there were only eight styles, though there were different colored lenses to mix and match. The sunglasses I tested had a large, rectangular frame shape with a slim and lightweight design that made them really comfortable. Though they looked big, the glasses fit my head well and stayed in place even if I jumped around. The glasses arrived with a zipper case, drawstring glasses bag, cleaning cloth, and several stickers for the brand. The glasses wore well and protected my eyes from the sun, but the arms of the glasses felt cheap and somewhat fragile compared to other sunglasses we tested.

We were satisfied with LensDirect, though the website and sunglasses didn’t stand out during testing. There was an average number of frame and lens options to shop, and the sunglasses we received were nice enough. While the thin arms of the glasses felt slightly weak, it may be because of the thin design. The lenses, on the other hand, were good quality. Some users may find that the glasses fit a little tight on their head—like these did with mine—which could cause some discomfort or headaches during extended wear.

GlassesUSA had an easy-to-use website with many frames and lenses to shop from. The site has a virtual try-on feature where you can upload an image of yourself to see how the frames might look. GlassesUSA had some lens options like single lenses, bifocals, progressive lenses, and near vision. Once you upload your prescription you can also customize the thickness of the lenses and if you want colorized or polarized lenses. With the colorized option you can even adjust how dark you want your lenses to be tinted for an additional charge.

Unfortunately, the glasses I received weren’t as I expected. They fit my head but seemed smaller than they looked like they’d be on the website. The acetate frames were lightweight, but they felt cheap. The lenses were similarly light but they scratched the fastest of all the sunglasses we tested. The glasses came in a neat zipper case attached to a lanyard, which is secure but squishable opposed to a hard-shell case, and two cleaning cloths.

Pair offered the most unique sunglasses we tested: a solid pair of frames that allow you to add exchangeable, magnetic fronts. These offer multiple styles for people who want more than one look and can also work with Pair’s prescription glasses, giving you more styles for your money. Though the convenience and options are awesome, the multiple styles made ordering online slightly confusing because it was hard to determine which frames you were editing or selecting lenses for. We tried two lens types from Pair: the standard prescription sunglasses, along with a set of Sun Tops, or magnetic frames that can attach to any set of Pair Eyewear (and turn them into prescription sunglasses).

When it comes to accessories, this brand offers a cute snap case with a pocket for a cleaning cloth or your extra frames. While we loved the idea of being able to swap out colorful frames, they moved around a bit too much for comfort. There was also a noticeable space between the snap-on part and the solid frame, which made them feel like they might slip off or break easily. We also noticed that the lenses seemed to scratch more easily than some other glasses we've tried.
