I used to hate returning gifts I purchased from Amazon. Whenever my fiancé would utter the "R" word, I'd roll my eyes and groan. Ugh. Do I really need to return that bizarre knick-knack that serves no purpose? I mean, a spider lives inside it now. It'd be rude to disturb it. For some unknown reason, I just couldn't be bothered. Eventually, when I sucked it up and returned that useless knick-knack, the process was relatively painless. I wondered why I had made such a fuss in the first place.

We so often think of the massive online retailer as a one-way service, convenience at its finest. For example, you know that shiny thing that lives in your digital shopping cart? Maybe you're holding out until your next paycheck, but deep down, you know you can get that shiny thing with just one click. If you're set up with Amazon Prime, you can get that shiny thing in a day or so. But what happens if that shiny thing ends up being lame or not what you expected? Well, it's surprisingly easy to return it. Fear not, I'll walk you through the process.

How to return a gift

1. Open the online resource center.

Select the "return a gift" button and sign into your personal Amazon account.

2. Enter the gift's order number and hit search.

You can locate the 17-digit order number on the left side of your packing list. If you don't have your packing list, contact Amazon. If it's a gift you're returning, you might want to ask the person for the number.

3. Pick the items you want to return from the order.

Enter the number of items you're returning (if applicable) and a return reason from the drop-down menu. If you purchased the items from a third-party seller, you'll see a "Submit Return Request" instead.

4. Select how you want to send the items back.

After you pick your shipping option, you'll receive a return label.

5. Slip your return authorization inside your package and stick the label to the outside of the box.

If your gift return is authorized, you'll receive a refund in the form of an Amazon.com gift card.

6. Drop off the package at your local UPS store.

It's a bit of a pain, I know, but you'll need to drop the package off at your local UPS store.
