Okay, so here’s the thing: A big chunk of my personal and professional life is spent sitting in front of a computer. From academic papers to work documents, much of my work from the past 10 years lives in my computer. This is stuff I really can't afford to lose. At all. Ever.

While searching for a way to store it all, I serendipitously stumbled upon the Toshiba Canvio Slim II hard drive ($82.98 at Amazon). While many rightly geek out over falling SSD prices, I love this old-fashioned spinning hard drive. It's easy to set up, affordable, has 1 TB of storage, can be used with either Mac or PC, and has a sleek design.

But hard drives (unlike SSDs), are easily damaged, rendering precious data useless. Luckily, when I was shopping for my drive, Amazon sensed my concern and recommended just the thing to set my mind at ease.

The Case Logic QHDC-101 Portable EVA Hard Drive Case ($5.90 at Amazon) has hard backing, padding, a pouch for the USB cable, and a wide elastic strap to secures the hard drive. It's also ideally sized for hard drives like the 4.2” x 3” Canvio Slim II. All in all, it's a clever combination of bulletproof vest and straightjacket for your sensitive data.

It's not the flashiest combo in the world, but I now own three Canvio Slim II drives, and each lives in a Case Logic case. I have dropped all of them together and separately from a variety of heights, and my beloved removable hard drives remain safe and undamaged. All together, the 3TB of space cost me less than most 1TB SSDs.
