There are few things more tedious or time-consuming than doing laundry. Between sorting, washing, drying, and—the worst of them all—folding, you’re liable to spend the better half of your Saturday (aka the one day a week you’re supposed to be relaxing) slaving away in front of the washer and dryer.

And speaking of your washer and dryer, they not only take up your precious free time but they also take up your precious space, especially if you live in an apartment or small home. That’s why the Internet is going crazy over the countertop tumble dryer that claims to dry your clothes in just 15 minutes.

Does it actually work?

The tiny appliance, named Morus Zero, uses special dehydration technology that both increases heat and decreases air pressure to speed up the evaporation of water. That process not only reduces the drying time but also minimizes energy usage by up to 40 percent.

While we haven’t tested the Morus Zero for ourselves yet, our senior lab technician Jon Chan is familiar with the technology, explaining, “Vacuum dehydration is used in food preparation and it's being adapted here for laundry.”

Should I buy it instead of a full-size dryer?

For when you don't want to wait hours for your laundry.

Probably not, according to Chan. “I think it's too small to replace even a compact model,” he says. (For reference, the dryer can hold up to 3.3 pounds, or 4 to 5 adult shirts.) “In fact, it looks small enough that at 15-minutes a load it'd probably be more efficient to line dry in the bathroom.” So if you’re tight on space, you’re likely better off looking for the smallest, full-size dryer you can find rather than this countertop version.

So who is it for?

Just because it can’t (or rather shouldn't) replace your full-size dryer, doesn’t mean that the Morus Zero doesn’t have some value. Chan recommends it for parents of small children who thanks to its built-in UV sterilization, which eliminates dangerous bacteria without using any toxic chemicals. It would be perfect for freshening up that stuffed animal your kids are always carrying around or quick-cleaning the never-ending stream of stained clothes.

It’s also useful to have in addition to your full-size dryer if you occasionally want to quickly wash and dry a handful of clothes (like when you thought you had washed your favorite shirt for your date later only to realize an hour beforehand that you didn’t). You can hand wash it and then toss it in the Morus Zero to avoid the hassle of waiting an entire regular laundry cycle

How can I get one?

The Morus Zero is currently only available for pre-order starting at $299 on its Kickstarter page. According to the company, it will begin shipping orders in December.
