For decades, all-in-one washer-dryer combos had a bad reputation for tiny drums and marathon cycle times. Thankfully, times have changed. The latest generation of ventless, heat-pump combo units offer larger capacities and much faster cycles, making them a viable alternative to a separate washer and dryer.
Two standout examples are the GE Profile PFQ97HSPVDS Ventless All-In-One and the Samsung Bespoke AI Ventless Laundry Combo WD53DBA900HZ. The GE Profile combo impressed reviewers with its efficiency, robust performance, and large drum. Meanwhile, Samsung’s Bespoke AI combo brings cutting-edge smart features, an ultra-large 5.3 cu. ft. capacity, and the promise of very speedy cycles. In this comparison, we’ll break down how these two top-tier combo machines stack up in performance, reliability, and overall value.
GE Profile PFQ97HSPVDS Ventless All-In-One
Dimensions: 28” x 46.7” x 32” (W x H x D)
Capacity: 4.8 cu. ft.
Finishes: Carbon Graphite
Special Features: Adaptive SmartDispense Technology, Pet Hair Removal, Microban Antimicrobial drum, SmartHQ app compatible
Energy Star rated: Yes
The GE Profile PFQ97HSPVDS is Reviewed’s top-rated washer-dryer combo, winning on the merits of its efficiency, performance, and smart design. The Energy Star-certified unit has a capacious, Microban-coated 4.8 cu. ft. drum. That’s roughly double the capacity of older washer-dryer combos and on par with traditional, standalone washers and dryers. In our lab tests, the GE delivered solid washing and drying performance with remarkably low energy usage, thanks to its inverter heat pump drying system. The GE Profile All-in-One stands at a tall 46.7″ and won’t slide under a counter. But it’s considerably smaller than side-by-side or stacked washer and dryer units, so you’re still saving a lot of space. It’s also feature-packed—Wi-Fi connectivity, app control, automatic detergent dispenser, steam and sanitizing cycles—and comes with an excellent warranty.

Samsung Bespoke AI Ventless Laundry Combo WD53DBA900HZ
Dimensions: 27" x 43.75" x 34.5" (W x H x D)
Capacity: 5.3 cu. ft.
Finishes: Dark Steel (WD53DBA900HZ), Brushed Black (WD53DBA900HB), Ivory (WD53DBA900HY)
Special Features: AI OptiWash & Dry, Super Speed wash and dry, AutoDispense detergent, app control
Energy Star rated: Yes
Samsung’s Bespoke AI Laundry Combo WD53DBA900HZ is a ventless all-in-one washer-dryer (note: they also offer a vented combo unit with a similar design and footprint, the WD90F53AVS) that leads with cutting-edge tech and an extra-large capacity. The 5.3 cu. ft. drum is one of the biggest ever in a combo unit, and a Super Speed mode wash and dry a load in as little as 98 minutes, Like the GE, it utilizes an inverter heat pump system for gentle, energy-efficient drying at lower temperatures. Where Samsung really tries to differentiate itself is in the tech: an AI OptiWash & Dry system that automatically adjusts settings based on fabric type and soil level, an automatic detergent and softener dispenser tank large enough for 47 loads, a 7-inch touchscreen, voice commands and the SmartThings app.
Pros
Large capacity
Advanced AI-supported tech
Ventless design
Cons
Heavy dryer loads may require additional drying time
One of the biggest historical drawbacks of combo units is how long they take to wash and dry a load. Both the GE and Samsung are far faster than older generation combos, but the GE has a edge here.
In our testing, the GE Profile could complete a full wash-and-dry cycle in just 85 minutes using its Quick cycle, and about 2 hours in Normal mode.
By contrast, Samsung claims a 98-minute wash+dry on its fastest Super Speed setting. But in practice, it appears that the 98-minute timing holds true only for smaller loads. That’s still impressive, but it’s important to know that larger loads—which are probably closer to your average-sized load at home—tend to run longer. Some users online have stated that a bulky bedding load took as long as 3 hours, and were still slightly damp at the end.
Trouble with bulky items (e.g. duvets and comforters) is a common for ventless combos, and the GE combo also wasn’t immune to this, but the GE we tested finished faster.
Both of these machines are excellent at getting your clothes clean, and both on par with traditional standalone washers. In lab tests, the GE Profile removed stains very effectively, especially in the delicate cyce.
But the Samsung Bespoke combo has a slight edge, we think. The AI OptiWash system automatically tweaks water temperature and cycle length to match soil levels. According to Consumer Reports, Samsung’s washer performance is one reason they currently recommend the WD53DBA900HZ.
In normal, everyday use, we expect the differences in wash performance are marginal. Both the GE and Samsung will get your everyday laundry clean. Still, given Samsung’s strong performance and its intelligent fabric-sensing wash cycles, we give Samsung a slight nod.
Dryer Performance – Winner: Tie
When it comes to drying, neither of these ventless combo units can match the sheer speed of a traditional vented dryer. Also, don’t expect your items to come our warm and fluffy. That’s the trade-off for using a heat pump system. Both the GE and Samsung deliver much gentler, more efficient drying than a conventional dryer, but they also require more time and occasionally leave damp spots on very heavy items.
Samsung boasts about a 98-minute wash-and-dry cycle time, but in reality it appears that that may be limited to just small loads. Large, more typical loads, will take longer. And we’ve seen reports of bulky loads (e.g. comforters) take as long as 3 hours.
The GE’s dryer cycle tended to run faster. However, we found that the GE’s moisture sensors sometimes called the cycle done while the clothes were still damp to the touch. We had to use the “More Dry” option to add extra time and fully dry those heavier items.
Essentially, both machines struggled with very heavy or oversize loads, which is a common limitation of combo units. For average loads of clothes, both the GE and Samsung do get everything adequately dry, they just take longer than a vented dryer.
Capacity – Winner: Samsung WD53DBA900HZ
Both of these machines offer generous capacity that’s on par with many standalone front-load washers. That in itself is a huge leap from older combo units, which often had tiny drums. That said, Samsung is clearly the winner here.
The GE Profile combo has 4.8 cu. ft. of drum space—enough to fit a large load of laundry or even bulky bedding. The Samsung has a 5.3 cu. ft. drum. That’s a not a huge increase in size, but enough to fit a few extra shirts or small towels in each load. Fewer loads needed means more laundry done in the same time, and that’s a clear advantage for busy households with lots to wash.

Physical Size – Winner: Samsung WD53DBA900HZ
If you’re trying to squeeze a laundry machine into a tight space, the dimensions of these combos could be a deciding factor.
The GE Profile combo is a tall machine, measuring 28” x 46-7/10” x 32” (W x H x D).
The Samsung, by comparison, is a bit less imposing at 27" x 43.75" x 34.5" (W x H x D) and requires an additional 2 inches of clearance from the rear wall.
In other words, GE’s unit is roughly 3 inches taller and 1 inch wider than Samsung’s, while Samsung’s is about 2.5 inches deeper front-to-back. Neither unit will fit under a standard countertop (both are simply too tall), but height could still matter if you have low overhead cabinets or shelves. Depth is a factor if you’re installing in a shallow closet.
Both are unquestionably smaller than side by side or stacked washer-dryer pairs, but measure thrice!
Energy Efficiency – Winner: Samsung WD53DBA900HZ
One major appeal of these heat pump combos is how little energy they use, especially for drying. Both models are Energy Star certified and will consume far less electricity than a traditional 240 V vented dryer. Between the GE and Samsung, the Samsung is slightly more energy-efficient in terms of measured annual consumption.
According to Energy Star, the Samsung WD53DBA900HZ’s annual washer energy use is 103 kWh/yr and the dryer is 319 kWh/yr.
The GE Profile PFQ97HSPVDS’s annual energy use, according to the same source, is 136 kWh/yr for the washer and 399 kWh/yr for the dryer.
That makes the Samsung a bit more energy efficient, though the real dollar savings between them is small.
Warranty and Reliability – Winner: GE Profile PFQ97HSPVDS
GE has the clear advantage over Samsung for long-term reliability and brand reputation. GE has decades of history in laundry appliances and generally a solid reputation in front-load washers (though arguably, the company is better at top-loaders than front-loaders).
Samsung’s laundry appliances, on the other hand, are relatively new and have yet to prove themselves. They’re also earned a bit of a reputation for being difficult to service quickly when repairs are needed, even under warranty. If something breaks, Samsung owners often report waiting weeks for service. GE’s service network is far more established. Of course, the Profile all-in-one combo and its heat pump system is newer and rarer than typical GE laundry units, so waiting for replacement parts may still end up being an issue. But I’d trust GE to schedule a fix faster than Samsung, all things being equal.
Samsung’s warranty looks generous on paper – 1 year parts and labor, 3 years on the drum, and 20 years on the Digital Inverter Motor (parts only beyond year 1).
GE’s warranty is slightly different: it gives 1 year parts and labor (same as Samsung), plus 5 years coverage (parts-only) on the sealed heat pump drying system, and 10 years (parts-only) on the motor. So GE covers more of the critical dry system, while Samsung covers the motor for longer. In practice, a long motor warranty seems good but motors aren’t usually what fail first—that would be the heat pump.
Overall - Winner: GE Profile PFQ97HSPVDS
The Samsung Bespoke AI WD53DBA900HZ wowed us with its sleek design, space age features, large capacity, and fast cycle times.
However, the GE Profile PFQ97HSPVDS ultimately comes out on top as our overall recommendation. The GE combo wins or ties in a lot of attributes we looked at. Perhaps most importantly, though, it comes from a brand with a longer track record in laundry appliances and is backed by a more confidence-inspiring warranty. Reliability and ease of repair are huge factors for any appliance that you hope to use for years, and GE currently has the edge there.
That’s not to say the Samsung combo is a bad choice—far from it. But for most people, we’d lean toward the GE Profile UltraFast Combo as the safer choice.
