What we like
The even oven will make bakers happy
The lack of a dedicated true convection mode does mean that the GE JB645RKSS isn't ideal for cooking multiple batches of baked goods simultaneously. However, that doesn't mean it's a lost cause in the baking department. The oven exhibited exemplary evenness and managed to effectively bake and roast everything we threw at it (or in it). We started by baking a batch of cookies. We noticed that the cookie bottoms were darker than expected (not burnt), but this is standard with most ovens and can be mitigated by avoiding black baking trays or sheets. When compared alongside one another, the cookies were remarkably even.
Next, we cooked a large pork loin in the oven. The resulting roast was cooked evenly throughout, and the outside was reasonably browned.
We also baked a pizza in the oven, and the resulting pie was less impressive. It was evenly cooked for the most part, but we did notice that sections seemed overdone.
We recommend shortening your baking times slightly if you plan on cooking in this oven.
The rangetop is spacious and versatile
Electric burners aren’t our favorite as they lack the speed and visual feedback of gas and the efficiency of induction. That said, the GE JB645RKSS’s rangetop is an excellent example of electric rangetops done right.
Thanks to the spacious burner layout, we found it easy to heat four pots simultaneously. There are four burners in total, and the front two are dual-ring, so you won't be forced to keep simmering sauces at the rear of the rangetop.
What we don’t like
Rear-mounted burner controls can cause problems
It’s rare to find freestanding electric ovens in this price range with front-mounted controls, but we’re still disappointed whenever we see burner dials on the rear of the unit.
Fortunately, rear controls on an electric range aren’t dangerous, but we prefer to avoid leaning over spitting and steaming pots and pans to adjust the burner temperatures when possible.
The GE JB645RKSS has a one-year warranty for parts and labor, which is the industry standard.
What owners are saying
The GE JB645RKSS has an average 4.6-star user rating out of 5 across three major retailers. Users like how simple it is to clean, the easy-to-use dual burners, and the sleek good looks.
Most reviews are positive, but some users highlighted how easy it is to scratch the rangetop surface.
Should you buy the GE JB645RKSS Freestanding Electric Range?
Yes, but only if you're on a tight budget
The GE JB645RKSS has an almost perfect oven, and the versatile rangetop is a pleasure to use. Unfortunately, it occupies a competitive price point and simply cannot match the value offered by feature-rich ranges from competing brands. If your budget can't be stretched and you don't mind the lack of convection then it's still a good option, but those looking for a more versatile range should look elsewhere.
The Samsung NE63A6511SS is available for $899 and has a similarly capable oven, but it also comes with convection, an air-fryer setting, and a bevy of smart features.
To make matters worse, an older GE model (and one of our favorite ranges), the JB655SKSS, comes with a convection setting and air-fryer mode and is still available for less than $800.
