If you're remodeling your kitchen or buying a new stove, you've probably wondered: Do I really need a range hood? The short answer is yes. A range hood does more than get rid of cooking smells—it's central to your home's air quality.
Cooking produces smoke, grease, moisture, odors, and airborne particles, whether you're cooking on gas, electric, or induction. A range hood helps capture those pollutants before they spread through your kitchen and the rest of your home. The EPA recommends using a range hood whenever you cook and, when possible, choosing one that vents to the outdoors.
But not every range hood performs the same way. The best choice depends on your stove, your cooking habits, your kitchen layout, and whether you can vent the hood outside.

What does a range hood do?
A range hood is an exhaust fan installed above or near your stove that captures and removes airborne byproducts of cooking. High-heat cooking methods such as frying and searing can produce particularly high levels of particles.
A hood that vents to the outdoors can remove these contaminants from your home rather than simply filtering them and sending the air back into the kitchen, as a microwave vent does.
The EPA recommends turning on your range hood whenever you cook and leaving it running for 10 to 20 minutes afterward. Cooking on the back burners can also improve the hood's ability to capture emissions.
It's also important to understand the placement requirements based on the size of your range, the height of your ceilings, and the material of your hood. Manufacturers and building codes set standards for fire safety—an incorrect installation could be costly.

Do electric and induction stoves need a range hood?
Yes. Electric stoves don't produce the same combustion byproducts as gas stoves, but the cooking itself still creates smoke, grease, moisture, odors, and airborne particles.
Induction cooktops also benefit from ventilation. Induction doesn't use a flame and therefore avoids the combustion emissions associated with gas cooking, but it doesn't eliminate the particles and other pollutants produced when food is heated.
If you're choosing between an electric, induction, or gas stove, don't think of ventilation as something you only need for gas. All cooking benefits from good ventilation.
Do gas stoves need a range hood?
Yes. Gas stoves have an additional reason to be properly ventilated: burning gas produces combustion byproducts.
For this reason, the EPA recommends installing and using exhaust fans over gas cooking appliances, preferably with the hood vented to the outdoors.
Is a vented or recirculating range hood better?
If you have the option, choose a range hood that vents outdoors. A ducted hood carries cooking pollutants, moisture, and odors outside. A recirculating hood (sometimes in the form of a microwave) pulls air through filters and returns the filtered air to the kitchen.
Recirculating vents can be useful when ducting outside isn't an option, but it isn't the same as exhausting the air from your home.
How powerful should a range hood be?
Range hood power is usually measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute), the volume of air moved by a fan per minute. 300 to 600 CFM is most common for vents installed over 30-inch ranges. A more powerful CFM is often needed for larger ranges, especially if they're gas. However, a higher CFM rating isn't automatically better.
The hood's size and shape, its position over the cooking surface, the ductwork, and how effectively it captures the cooking plume all affect real-world performance.
There's another reason not to simply buy the most powerful hood you can find: very high CFM can depressurize a home and potentially contribute to backdrafting from combustion appliances. In some installations, makeup air (a construction term essentially meaning a controlled hole in the building envelope) may be necessary.
In other words, bigger isn't necessarily better when it comes to range hoods. Properly sized and installed is better.
What type of range hood is best?
The best range hood is the one that fits both your kitchen and your cooking style.

- Under-cabinet hoods: Compact and practical for standard kitchens, but they can cramp your vertical workspace
- Wall-mounted canopy hoods: Generally offer good coverage and an open workspace
- Island hoods: Need careful planning because they don't have a wall or cabinets to help contain the cooking plume
- Downdraft systems: Can make sense when an overhead hood isn't desirable or practical, but cost is a serious consideration
- Over-the-range microwaves: Can provide ventilation while saving space, but they're usually recirculating vents and not the best choice for demanding cooking or high-output ranges
Whatever style you choose, make sure the hood is properly sized for your cooking appliance and installed with appropriate ductwork. A hood's advertised CFM doesn't tell the whole story; restrictive ductwork can significantly reduce actual airflow.
Is downdraft ventilation effective?
Downdraft ventilation can work, but it has some important trade-offs. Instead of pulling rising cooking emissions upward into a hood, a downdraft system draws them downward through a vent positioned behind or beside the cooking surface.
Some systems hide away in countertops when they're not in use, making them particularly appealing for kitchen islands or kitchens where an overhead hood would obstruct the view. This also makes for an expensive addition to your appliance suite.
The functional challenge is that cooking emissions naturally rise. Conventional overhead hoods can take advantage of that upward movement, while downdraft systems have to pull the cooking plume downward.
For that reason, they can be less effective than overhead vents, and often need to be more powerful to work well. They also tend to be far more expensive than overhead hoods, so keep that in mind when designing a kitchen space.
How do you use and maintain a hood?
Even a good range hood won't work well if you don't use it correctly. It's best to turn it on before or as you begin cooking, rather than waiting until the kitchen is already smoky.
Remember to use the back burners when possible, since they're easier for an overhead hood to capture. Then, leave the hood running for 10 to 20 minutes after cooking to help clear the remaining pollutants from the air.
It's also important to clean the grease filter regularly. A dirty filter can interfere with airflow, reduce effectiveness, and potentially become a fire hazard.
