Knocking turns the tinted door panel clear
Glide n' Serve drawer great for snacks and drinks
Fridge temperatures run a bit warm
But the best reason by far to buy one of LG's new French door fridges is the excellent cooling, freezing, and preservation we observed in out performance tests.
While they certainly aren't cheap, LG's newest fridges are at least a good value for what they offer, as long as you can catch one on sale. For the fully-loaded LFXS30796D, which comes with InstaView and a black stainless finish, a good sale price runs about $2,900. The more affordable LFXS30766S is $2,600 on sale.
The most interesting feature on the LG LFXS30796D/S is its InstaView window. The right-hand fridge door looks like it has a tinted glass finish, but it lights up to reveal the food inside if you knock on it with your hand. Unlike fancy all-glass fridges, the InstaView still lets you hide the inside of a messy fridge for when company is visiting.
We're torn on the concept. While it's nice to be able to see what's in the fridge without opening the door, that view will likely be blocked by salad dressing bottles and wine.
If you'd rather have extra cash than an unusual door, the LFXS30766D/S model has a solid door and sells for about $200 less. Both still come with LG's door-in-door design, which adds a compartment inside the fridge door for easy access to frequently used items.
Both fridges are available in conventional stainless (with a model number ending in S), or LG’s fingerprint-resistant black stainless (with a model number ending in D).
Also standard? Bright LED interior lighting, a drawer inside the fridge with three different temperature settings, and door-mounted slim ice maker.
In terms of fit and finish, LG's fridges tend to be among the best in their class. Still, not everything is perfect: We found the control panel to be rather cluttered, distracting from an otherwise elegant finish. One of the crispers in the model we tested also had a tendency to stick.
Of course, this fridge’s pretty face wouldn’t sell without substance. Fortunately, when we put a LFXS30796D into our refrigerator test labs, it proved its worth with ideal temperature control in both fridge and freezer.
In the fridge, temperatures stayed about a degree and a half above the 37ºF "sweet spot" we set our fridges to, but that's a common occurrence with most fridges. If you keep a lot of sensitive, specialty foods in your fridge, just turn it down a degree. The crisper drawers retained just enough moisture to keep salad fresh without rotting, and stable temperatures over time in the freezer will keep freezer burn at bay.
All models are Energy Star certified, and come with an impressive three-part warranty that includes seven years of parts coverage on certain internal components, and ten years of parts coverage for LG’s linear compressor.
If you're looking for a fridge with unique features and performance to match, we definitely recommend the new French door models from LG. While they may not be quite as big of a bargain compared to some more conventional models out there, we think the great performance and interesting features add enough value to make it worthwhile.
And if you’re looking for a stainless steel kitchen package, we’ve got a matching LG dishwasher you should really check out.
