This comforter set is a reviewer favorite—but is it actually any good?

It’s pretty much your average bed-in-a-bag

Not to brag, but I’m somewhat of a bedding expert at this point in my career. I’ve tested dozens of blankets, including both heated and weighted varieties, as well as lots of sheets and even mattress toppers. Needless to say, I’ve been around the block when it comes to bedding, and my interest was piqued when I came across the Larkspur Comforter Set from Home Decorators Collection.

What captured my attention? Namely, its near-perfect rating from close to 200 reviewers. You don’t see that kind of feedback every day, so we decided to test this comforter out for ourselves to see what all the fuss is about.

Home Decorators Collection offers furniture, rugs, lighting and more.

Once a furniture brand based out of Georgia, Home Decorators Collection was acquired by Home Depot in 2006. Today, the brand is exclusively sold online and in-store by the home improvement retailer, and its offerings include a wide range of furniture and home decor.

The Home Decorators Collection has everything from comforters and towels to fireplaces, bathroom vanities, and ceiling fans. Many of its pieces have a classic, traditional aesthetic, but there are also some farmhouse-style products, as well.

This comforter set comes with five pieces, including shams and decorative pillows.

The Home Decorators Collection Larkspur 5-Piece Comforter Set caught my eye because it has an impressive 4.8 stars from buyers. This near-perfect rating is on-par with one of my all-time favorite comforters, the Alberta Euro Down Comforter from The Company Store, which costs more than four times as much.

The Larkspur Comforter Set includes a comforter, two matching shams, and two decorative pillows. The blanket itself is made from 100% cotton sateen fabric with a polyester fiberfill inside. The set features a distressed gray and beige floral design that has a distinctly farmhouse vibe. The MSRP for a queen-size version of this set is around $100, but we purchased it on sale for $75.

Why do reviewers think it’s so great? Some of the most commonly echoed sentiments include that the color scheme and pattern is beautiful, the blanket is warm and a comfortable weight, and the construction is high-quality.

Here’s what one buyer had to say: “My daughter moved away and took her comforter with her! I wanted to buy something that would make me smile when I looked in her room, not cry! When she came home for a visit she loved it and slept in the next day. She still feels at home and I love the sophistication yet cozy atmosphere of her room! The lovely colors of grey and beige is just perfect.” (...is someone chopping onions?)

Here’s what we thought

With all its glowing reviews, the comforter set had some large shoes to fill! To test it out, my boyfriend and I slept under it for a little over a week. In the end, there were definitely some things we liked about it—and others that we didn’t.

The print is beautiful

The online picture (left) and actual color (right) don't quite match.

As soon as I took the Larkspur comforter out of its bag, I was instantly smitten with the pattern. The gray, beige, taupe, and ivory hues are incredibly mellow and soothing, and they matched my gray headboard really well. The shams match perfectly, and the distressed print gives the whole set a rustic, farmhouse feel.

However, it's worth noting that the actual fabric is darker in person. In the product photos, the fabric looks light gray, but it's several shades darker in real life.

The comforter is so-so in terms of comfort and warmth

This comforter is really thin, so it worked well on hot summer nights.

However, while the blanket gets top marks for style, it falls flat in terms of comfort—at least in my opinion, anyway.

The cotton sateen fabric is just… not soft. I’m a very tactile person, so I like things to feel nice against my skin, and this comforter just didn’t cut it. That’s not to say it was rough or scratchy, but it was solidly “meh” in terms of texture. Plus, when I hear the term “sateen,” I think of a silky, buttery fabric, and this felt more akin to a cheap cotton upholstery.

We also weren’t impressed with the blanket’s warmth. It has a surprisingly thin layer of polyester fill inside, and while I thought it was fine for a hot summer night, there’s no way it would be warm enough in the winter. My boyfriend, who sleeps cold, needed to put a throw blanket on top of it to keep warm.

The decorative pillows are truly adorable

I'm smitten with this adorable bee pillow.

Like many people, I’m a sucker for throw pillows, and I did love the cute bee pillow that came with this comforter. It’s on the smaller side at 16-by-16 inches, but the embroidery is beyond precious. There’s also a simpler white throw pillow that’s 18-by-18 inches so you can layer the two on your bed.

Is this comforter set worth it?

Conclusion

We weren't all that impressed with this comforter.

I’ll just come out and say it: I don’t think this is a five-star comforter set. Sure, it’s aesthetically pleasing, but it’s not all that soft or warm. Its matching accessories are definitely a nice touch, especially if you like to have a matching bed set, but there are much nicer comforters out there. (Have I become a bedding snob? Maybe, but it comes with the job.)

If you’re looking for a wonderfully soft, plush, and warm blanket for your bed, I’d recommend any of the top five or six picks on our Best Comforters list. In fact, our top pick, the Linenspa All-Season White Down Alternative Quilted Comforter is even more affordable than the Larkspur Comforter Set, so you could buy the blanket and some decorative accents to spruce up your bedroom.

Overall, the Home Decorators Collection Larkspur 5-Piece Comforter Set is pretty much your average bed-in-a-bag. It would be a good option for a farmhouse-style guest room, but I can’t say I’d want to sleep under it myself.
