Myst was my first computer game. Even though I was five-years-old and had no idea what I was doing, it was still a memorable experience. I often lost interest in the mind-boggling puzzles because they were too advanced, but I stuck around for the creepy atmosphere. The ambient sounds had the biggest impact on me.
As I clicked my way to the clock tower, a haunting structure that stood at the edge of a misty lake, the desolate island emitted a low groan. The noise stopped me dead in my tracks. It sounded like the island was alive and in a deep slumber. The game frightened me, but I couldn't stop playing. Myst was just too compelling. I had to unravel every single mystery the game had to offer.
The atmospheric puzzler, which released in 1993, was one of the most popular computer games of all time. It was an open world game before open world games were a thing. If you're a fan of the original game and own an Android phone, well, you're in luck. realMYST is now available on Google Play for $6.99. It's the same game, but with a few new features.
The touchscreen controls are a given. All you have to do is tap the screen with your finger to travel in that direction. There's also a bookmarking tool and a built-in guide. These features aren't groundbreaking, by any means, but they help modernize an old classic. If you use Apple devices, you can download realMyst on the App Store for the same price. It's compatible with both the iPhone and iPad.
