Editor’s Note: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that different kinds of masks and respirators provide different levels of protection against COVID-19. Loosely woven cloth products provide the least protection, while well-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s offer more protection. Well-fitting NIOSH-approved respirators (including N95s) offer the highest level of protection.
At the beginning of the pandemic, sewing enthusiasts started making their own face coverings at home, with some creating mass amounts to donate or sell to those in need. Now, it seems almost every retailer produces and sells face coverings. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to figure out which is the best mask to buy—and which one is best for you. It’s easy to default and pick one based on a fun pattern or color, but you may end up with one that offers minimal protection or doesn't fit your face comfortably. If you’re going to wear a mask you’ll want to be sure that you’re taking more than just looks into consideration in order to protect yourself and others. The CDC recommends staying up to date on COVID-19 community levels in your area as well as wearing a mask to help protect those with medical conditions from further illness.
