Good American Denim Review

Keeping up with the Kardashian-Jenner businesses is no easy task. From Kim Kardashian’s Skims shapewear line to the youngest Jenner's Kylie Cosmetics, the famous family is cleaning up in several industries—including actual cleaning supplies, thanks to Kris Jenner’s Safely products. As for Khloé Kardashian’s venture of choice? Good American, a clothing company known for its denim.

The buzzy brand has been on my radar for awhile, thanks to Instagram ads that proved as ubiquitous as, well, content about the family themselves. While countless celebrities become the face of a beauty or clothing brand, Good American has had more longevity than many. And although marketing clearly runs in Kardashian’s genes, I wondered how her brand’s jeans really stacked up. I reached out to the company to try a few of its bestselling denim styles: the Good Legs, which is $119, the Good Boy, which is $139, and the Always Fits Good Classic, which is $149.

What is Good American?

Khloé Kardashian partnered with entrepreneur Emma Grede to launch Good American in 2016. The brand started off with denim, selling a whopping $1 million worth of jeans on its launch day. Following that initial success, it expanded into a wide range of apparel, including swimwear and activewear.

Jeans remain a big part of the brand, however, and the company is known for offering styles in sizes ranging from 00 to 32—including size 15, which the brand “invented” for those who feel they’re in between women’s size 14 and 16. The company’s focus on fit further includes a collection of “Always Fits” denim, which it claims “stretches up to four sizes” for those who experience weight fluctuations. Good American denim comes in a wide variety of styles, including Good Legs, a skinny jean and the brand’s No. 1 bestseller.

What I like about Good American denim

The jeans keep their fit

While some stretchy jeans I’ve owned stretched too much and ended up fitting too loosely, the Good Legs and the Always Fits Good Classic keep their shape without sacrificing comfort, even after a month of wear. They fit me like a glove and don’t gap in the back like most jeans I’ve tried, whether brand new or on day 30 of use.

As someone who typically wears only skinny jeans, I’ve started to experiment with different styles lately (no, not just because Gen Z says skinny jeans are out). I especially like the style of the Always Fits Good Classic, which the brand calls “Skinnyish.” It has the fit of a high waist skinny jean through the thighs with the wider cuff opening of a straight-leg jean. The Good Legs, on the other hand, fits like a classic high-rise skinny jean, tapered from hip to ankle.

They’re comfortable and functional

Thanks to their design details, Good American jeans are both fashionable and functional. The Good Boy, for instance, has slits on the edge of each leg, so you can show off your shoes underneath the otherwise wide pant legs. Of the three jeans I tried, the Good Legs skinny jeans are my favorite. The fabric is super soft and stretchy, making them almost as comfortable as a pair of leggings. Plus, they feature subtle shading I’d never seen on a pair of jeans before, with darker denim on the inner and outer thigh.

The styles are fashion-forward

Some celebrity-backed clothing looks like something the star would never be caught dead in. But I could picture Kardashian, and many other celebrities for that matter, stepping out in these jeans. The styling options are practically endless, especially given the number of cuts and styles Good American sells. I pair mine with heeled boots to dress them up for going out, or with Vans and a hoodie for a casual walk.

What I don’t like about Good American

The sizing is confusing

While the perfect pair of jeans can be a major confidence boost, finding jeans that fit perfectly is no easy feat. I was especially excited to slip on the Always Fits jeans, as I’ve never tried a pair of jeans that can stretch to fit multiple sizes. However, the Always Fits denim sizing system was confusing to me.

The jeans come in size increments of four, going from “00 to 4” to “28 to 32.” I typically take a 4, and ordered a size 4 in the Good Legs and Good Boy jeans. However, I was hesitant to choose the “00 to 4” in the Always Fits, as I was afraid they’d look painted on, and my body measurements corresponded better with the “6 to 12.” Many reviews mentioned ordering a size up, so I went with the “6 to 12” to be on the safe side. While they stretched out a bit with time, the jeans still fit me about the same as both size 4 styles I tried, making the “6 to 12” label misleading. Plus, while the fabric is stretchier, it isn’t as soft as the Good Legs jeans.

I also ran into fit issues with the Good Boy jeans, which are far too long for my 5-foot-3-inch frame and drag on the floor as I walked. While boyfriend jeans are meant to be baggy, they look much looser on me than in the photos on the site. The Good Boy cut currently isn’t offered in the petite section, which the brand says includes styles for those 5-foot-4 and under. (Even so, the other two non-petite jeans I tried were a good length.)

Is Good American denim worth it?

Yes, but it depends on the style

As for whether the Good Legs are a good buy, assuming you don’t mind the up-to-$150 prices? My answer is a resounding yes. I love the style of the jeans and felt the details like shading, super soft fabric, and true-to-size fit make them worth the $119 price tag.

However, it’s less cut and dry with the other two jeans I tried, as I wasn’t as much of a fan of the fit. But because I still liked the fabric and design elements of the Always Fits Good Classic, I’d recommend buying a couple of sizes to try and returning the rejects, keeping in mind that Good American’s website accepts returns requested within 21 days of purchase, with a $5 restocking fee per pair.
