I love wearing skirts—but I hate worrying about flashing everyone should my hem get caught by a sudden gust of wind. I also love wearing shorts—but I hate that my favorite denim cut-offs don’t feel appropriate for most date nights or family parties. Rather than embarrass myself when climbing into my boyfriend’s truck or show up to a nice restaurant underdressed, I found something that solves all of the above issues: a skort.

Because I’m a big fan of inexpensive fast fashion, I’m a big fan of Shein—and that’s where I found the skort that’s become one of the most-worn pieces of clothing in my closet. Not only that, because it’s just $9, I ended up buying four more. I can’t stop, won’t stop telling everyone who will listen how much I love this skort—and why it’s something you can wear almost anywhere.

What I like about the Shein skort

It looks like a skirt from the front but shorts from the back.

I first ordered the skort in black in my usual size small. I could say it fits true to size but that doesn’t do it justice—it fits really well. The high-rise waist hits an inch above my navel and the hem hits a few inches below my booty on my 5-foot-5 frame. The waistband rests against my skin without being too tight or too loose. It’s just right. Same with the thighs—the shorts don’t cut into my skin nor do they gape.

There’s a zipper in the back, which makes it easy to pull the skort on. It also features a tie around the front so you can cinch the waist as you please. The cotton fabric has a textured weave that makes it look like linen, and it’s lightweight but not see-through at all in any of the colors I’ve purchased.

The real highlight of this skort, however, is its versatility. I would list all of the places and occasions it’s appropriate for, but the list would basically be never-ending. The skort is casual enough that I can wear it while running errands or just hanging out with friends at home. At the same time, it’s dressy enough that I can wear it to a fancier party or to happy hour at a bougie bar downtown.

What I don’t like about the Shein skort

The only issue I have with this skort is how easily the cotton material wrinkles. If you leave it sitting in the dryer or toss it in your suitcase—both of which I’ve done—you’ll have to iron it or steam it before you wear it. The wrinkles aren’t as noticeable on the black version but on the lighter colors, it’s unwearable if you don’t hang it immediately after drying it.

Is the Shein skort worth buying?

You can choose black or one of five other earth tones.

Absolutely, seeing as I have one for every day of the work week. It’s my go-to party outfit, my go-to everyday outfit, and previously my go-to first-date outfit (which may have played a part in landing my boyfriend?). The skort comes in women’s sizes XS to XL and in six muted colors, five of which I own. I wear it at least twice a week and it’s an easy way to look instantly more dressed-up while still feeling comfortably dressed-down.
