PlayStation 5 preorders are open, and one thing is clear: next generation consoles are set to fly off the shelves as we head toward the holiday season.

With your PS5 pre-ordered (if not now, when?), it’s time to pre-order some games to help you appreciate Sony’s shiny new console. Here are the top titles we’re most excited about as launch day creeps closer. We’ve started off focusing on games you can pre-order now, while others are further off on the horizon.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie was universally beloved and deservedly so; the hero, Miles Morales, was a supporting character in the excellent PS4 game, Marvel’s Spider-Man, but in this follow up he takes center stage. This PS5 launch title will open up the Harlem area of New York and cast you as Miles as he learns from Peter Parker and becomes Spider-Man.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

One of PlayStation’s most recognizable and cute characters, Sackboy was the protagonist of LittleBigPlanet. This 3D platformer offers a new, isometric view on the action and promises cooperative multiplayer fun for two to four people. This is certain to be a great choice for families and it will be available at launch.

Demon's Souls

This action RPG is a remake of the popular PS3 title which surprised everyone by being fiendishly difficult, but also boasted innovative combat mechanics and went on to spawn a series of unforgiving games. With all new visuals befitting a next-gen console and fresh attacks for the big bosses, this violent medieval fantasy is sure to test your mettle.

Destruction All Stars

This launch title is all about vehicular mayhem and it looks loud, brash, and very fun. It’s an action-packed sports game where teams go head-to-head in brightly lit arenas trying to smash each other up in a crazy destruction derby. This one may have flown under the radar a little bit, but it looks like a whole lot of fun.

Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War

Fans of the series will know what to expect from this Call of Duty: Black Ops sequel, which casts you as a CIA operative in pursuit of a Soviet spy. The single player campaign spans the globe challenging you with a series of suicidal missions before culminating in multiple endings that depend on the choices you make. If you don’t care for story and prefer to dive straight into chaotic firefights, the multiplayer game is for you.

Coming soon

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Dr. Nefarious is at it again and it’s up to Ratchet and his robotic sidekick, Clank, to save the universe once more. Traversing enormous worlds through inter-dimensional rifts with an array of wacky weapons at your fingertips, this is sure to be chaotic fun for the whole family. Set for release during the PS5’s “launch window” there’s unfortunately no firm date for this one yet.

Cyberpunk 2077

Available at PS5 launch, but also coming to last gen consoles, Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most hotly anticipated game of the year. From the studio behind The Witcher 3, this sci-fi RPG is set in a world of megacities and body modification. It looks gorgeous, features a world with real depth, and fully embraces its theme of transhumanism. As a bonus, it also has Keanu Reeves in it.

Hitman 3

It’s almost time for Agent 47 to travel to a whole new set of gorgeous, exotic, beautifully realized locations and employ his very particular set of skills to stealthily send a host of baddies to their deserved doom. This one lands January 20, 2021, but you can bet it will be worth the wait.

Final Fantasy XVI

The epic scale of this action RPG series never fails to impress and we expect plenty of swords and sorcery in this next installment, not to mention iconic characters and familiar creatures. Featuring a fresh story in this rich universe, it looks as though the series will veer back towards high fantasy and the trailer shows off plenty of combo attacks and ranged magic in the combat.

Far Cry 6

Take up arms as a guerilla soldier and lead a revolution to see if you can bring “El Presidente’s” rule to an end. Violent and chaotic open-world action is a given here as you pit your wits against an evil dictator played by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito. Sadly, this one doesn’t land until February 26, 2021.

Final mentions

There are several other amazing-looking PS5 titles on the horizon that don’t have release dates yet. You will play as a cat in a robotic world in Stray, dive into supernatural combat in Ghostwire: Tokyo, or master witchcraft and wizardry in Hogwarts Legacy. We’re also excited about Horizon Forbidden West, Returnal, Resident Evil 8, Lord of the Rings: Gollum and God of War 2: Ragnarok.
