Oven mitts are probably one of the least exciting yet utterly essential categories of kitchen products. We use oven mitts all the time, but we rarely think about the science behind protecting our hands from screaming hot casserole dishes, roasters and baking sheets. So we decided to put nine of the most popular brands to the test to see which ones can handle the heat and which mitts should stay hidden away on the drawer.

Here are the best oven mitts we tested that are available in Canada.

1. Food52 Five Two Silicone Oven Mitts

We love the aesthetics of the Food52 silicone oven mitts.

Food52 is an online community that publishes pro-chef-approved recipes and has begun to market its own line of beautiful kitchen appliances, along with cooking and baking ware. Well-known brick-and-mortar stores like Nordstrom have since picked up the brand.

These mitts offer a blend of heat-resistant silicone, and soft fabric, making them very comfortable to wear. The interior is soft, and we love that the mitts extend up the forearm for extra protection. They’re also washer and dryer safe.

The build quality certainly stood out during testing, and we’re certain they will last a long time, which is good considering the price. These are on the high end of the price scale but worth splurging on if you do a lot of baking.

2. Big Red House Oven Mitts

The Big Red House outperformed other oven mitts in both round of testings.

While many manufacturers tend to steer towards silicone for heat protection, there is something about the comfort and look of a traditional cotton mitt. Would you believe these cotton mitts allowed us to hold a baking sheet right out of a 450°F (232°C) oven for four minutes before we felt the heat? In comparison, most of the other mitts we tested were only comfortable for just over a minute.

The mitts look appealing and are very cozy, lined with a soft Terry cloth. The outside of the mitts do have narrow silicone strips, but it’s not for heat protection; instead, they allow for better grip on dishes and baking sheets or even adjusting a hot oven rack.

3. OXO Good Grips Silicone Oven Mitts with Potholder

If you have small hands, you'll find this mitt from OXO to be the perfect size

Traditional oven mitts tend to be big and bulky, ensuring hands of all sizes can fit inside. We found the OXO Good Grips Silicone Oven Mitt and Pot Holder set to be perfect for those whose hands may be on the smaller size.

When it came to performance, these mitts held their own. We were able to hold a hot try for four minutes before feeling the heat. The gloves also offer enough wiggle room for fingers to perform precision tasks such as picking up a spoon.

The biggest downside to this set is that it’s a combination of one oven mitt and one potholder. It simply isn’t as practical as a set with two mitts.

4. Homwe Silicone Oven Mitts

If you’d rather grab a pair of silicone mitts than stick with plain old cotton, Homwe’s offering is probably your best bet.

If your preference leans towards silicone mitts, then this set might be worth consideration. We could hold a hot baking sheet for more than a minute before starting to feel the heat. The inside of the mitts are also quite comfortable. They are also long enough to provide extra protection for your forearm.

These mitts are large. While they are thin enough to enable you to pick up utensils, those with small to medium hands might be overwhelmed by their sheer bulkiness.

5. Grill Armor Gloves

If you can get past appearances, there are some definite pros to opting for this style of oven mitt.

Certainly not the best-looking pair of oven mitts on our list. They look like they belong in the garage or garden shed rather than the kitchen, but they do the trick. There is something to be said about having the freedom to move fingers when baking. Not only is it easier to get a grip on surfaces, but you can also easily move oven racks.

While the gloves performed quite well, allowing us to hold a hot tray for more than 30 seconds, we did find them a bit on the uncomfortable side. The insides proved to be scratchy. They also may be too big for some people, leaving room at their fingertips. These gloves were a bit of a hassle to take off as they have a much snugger fit than a traditional mitt.

All that being said, if you prefer gloves over mitts, this pair is worth checking out.

6. The 'Ove’ Glove Hot Surface Handler

The main selling point of the 'Ove' glove is the degree of dexterity it provides.

The second pair of gloves on our list. Once again, not taking home any prizes in the looks category.

The ‘Ove’ Glove certainly offers more dexterity while handling hot objects, and kitchen utensils. That’s definitely the biggest selling point. On the downside, they proved to be uncomfortable and a bit tight. Those with large hands will probably hate how tight these gloves fit.

Protection-wise, these gloves disappointed, offering less protection than the Grill Armor gloves, but not by a whole lot.

7. San Jamar Cool Touch Flame Mitts

This mitt didn't meet our expectations when it came to protection or design.

An oven mitt made from Kevlar. Sounds fancy! But when we put them to the test, we were left disappointed.

These gloves are big. Very big. It’s hard to imagine the size of hands that would actually fill them. They were so large they almost felt shapeless. The Kevlar material also proved to be slippery while gripping hot items, and uncomfortably scratchy to wear.

We were able to hold a hot tray right out of a 450°F (232°C) oven for just over 30 seconds before we had to set it down. Don’t get us wrong, 30 seconds is quite a lot of time, but when you consider this pair of mitts is one of the most expensive, you would think it would have held up to heat a little better than that.

8. Mastrad Orka Kitchen Silicone Mitt

The Mastrad Orka is our least favourite mitt of the bunch

These mitts proved to be one of the most disliked pairs on our list. Sure, we could hold hot baking dishes for more than 30 seconds, but the actual silicone the gloves are made from proved to be problematic. The exterior picked up loose hair, lint, oven soot, almost anything it came in contact with. The gloves always look dirty.

They also weren’t very comfortable. The machine-washable cotton felt okay, but the mitt itself forces your hand into a strange position. Not our favourite pair of mitts.

9. Williams Sonoma Oven Mitt

The most traditional of the oven mitts we've tested, the Williams Sonoma mitt reminds us of the ones we already have in the kitchen.

Considering the pedigree, we were surprised these mitts from William Sonoma didn’t perform better. While the pair is one of the most attractive, performance-wise it was the worst. Imagine an oven mitt that protects your hands for about 6 seconds. Yup, you read that right, six seconds.

We also question the longevity of these mitts. They are thin, and the seams have ragged edges. You’re paying for looks, not functionality, with these mitts. While we won’t say stay away, just know there are better pairs of oven mitts out there.
