There are three main reasons we love the original Home Alone film. First, it was written by legendary screenwriter John Hughes. Second, it was a career-defining role for Macaulay Culkin. And third, it featured some of the greatest comedic performances from Catherine O’Hara, John Candy and Joe Pesci.

Over 30 years later, the sixth installment in the Home Alone franchise, Home Sweet Home Alone, has arrived—and it premieres on Disney+ on Friday, November 12.

The new film is the first in the franchise to be released by Disney, which acquired the rights in its purchase of 20th Century Fox. The cast will include Jojo Rabbit’s breakout star Archie Yates as Max Mercer, a boy who gets left home alone while his family travels to Japan. In a nod to the original film, Macaulay Culkin, who starred as the abandoned mischief-maker Kevin McAllister in the 1990 film, appears in a cameo, as does his on-screen older brother Buzz, played by Devin Ratray.

What is Home Sweet Home Alone about?

The premise of the Home Alone sequel is familiar: Max Mercer (Archie Yates) is left home alone when the rest of his family takes a trip to Japan over the holidays. While his family is overseas, a married couple (let’s call them The Wet Bandits 2.0) try to break into Max’s home to steal a valuable heirloom. When Max catches wind of their intentions, he booby-traps the house to ward them off.

The film co-stars Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Kenan Thompson, This Way Up star Aisling Bea and Veep’s Timothy Simons. Saturday Night Live star Mikey Day co-wrote the script with Streeter Seidel, who also writes for the late night comedy show. The film’s director, Dan Mazer, is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Sacha Baron Cohen, directing both Borat films, Bruno and The Dictator.
