How we tested
Rice cooked in the Our Place Rice Cooker came out fluffy and perfectly cooked across every preset tested.
I eat rice nearly every day, but I'd never owned or even used a rice cooker. That's right, at the age of 27, I'd been relying solely on Minute Rice. I've been trying to make some non-toxic swaps in my home, though, so I jumped at the chance to try the Our Place Rice Cooker.
I wanted to try each of the six cooking modes to see if the grass was really "grainer" with a more expensive rice cooker. The included Grain Guide offers a helpful breakdown of serving sizes and settings for each type.
When using the presets for white rice, brown rice, and oatmeal, each came out perfectly cooked and fluffy, without sticking to the pot. The Quick Cook setting works for white or brown rice, with the caveat that since the pre-soak cycle is skipped, the grains come out a bit firmer. Honestly, I didn't notice a difference, and I appreciated the extra 10 minutes or so back in my night.
The oatmeal preset runs 25 minutes, with a recommendation to add an extra 20 minutes when using steel-cut oats. I usually grab whichever kind is on sale, but I appreciated the additional information and found that both came out great.
What we like
Moderate pricing for a rice cooker with fuzzy logic
Fuzzy logic—the inclusion of sensors or microchips that can adjust temperature and cooking time dynamically—is essentially the gold standard for rice cookers. Most models with fuzzy logic cost between $120 and $230, putting the Our Place Rice Cooker on the lower end.
There are budget-friendly rice cookers that don't have fuzzy logic, but the likelihood of burnt, gummy, or mushy rice increases significantly.
Preset settings for a wide variety of foods
The Our Place Rice Cooker's manual settings allow for cooking times from 5 minutes to 2 hours, covering grains beyond just white rice.
Since the quinoa craze a couple of years ago, tons of people—myself included—have diversified their palates with grains beyond just white rice: wild rice, oatmeal, farro, you name it. Yet most rice cookers don't offer options for these, leaving the user to guess at cooking times and temperatures.
The Our Place Rice Cooker has optional manual settings that let you play around with different times (from 5 minutes to 2 hours) to cook different foods, even going beyond just grains.
Delay timer helps with on-time dinner
As a child, I hated when my mom made dinner in the Crock-Pot. As an adult, I completely understand why she did. Doing anything after the workday feels like too much, and it's all too easy for me to order delivery instead of cooking.
The Our Place Rice Cooker's delay timer let me truly set it and forget it—for up to 24 hours. You can cook full meals in the rice cooker with the custom settings, but the 24-hour window only really works for shelf-stable ingredients. For me, it was perfect to set it in the morning and come home to a hot side dish without the wait or mental load.
If I did forget to set the rice cooker one morning—totally hypothetical, of course—the Quick Cook setting uses fuzzy logic to speed up the cooking cycle by up to 20%.
Compact and sleek
I'm guilty of falling for one-use appliances. I own an ice cream maker, a nugget ice machine, and I have my eye on the Ninja Slushi. With all those machines, my counters and cabinets are constantly crowded, so I appreciate how compact the rice cooker is. It takes up just a small portion of my kitchen island, and it's sleek enough that I don't mind leaving it out on the counter.
Easy to clean
Cleanup was easy, thanks to the Our Place Rice Cooker's removable pot and nonstick coating.
The inner cooking pot lifts out easily, and the non-toxic nonstick coating makes it exceptionally easy to clean. The inner lid liner snaps in and out and disconnects by simply depressing the hooks that hold it in place. It has ridges and indentations, but it was still easy to clean.
What we don't like
Plastic lid feels a bit flimsy
The base and inner cooking pot of this rice cooker feel heavy-duty, but the lid itself is slightly flimsy. The device opens with a push of a button but has to be closed manually. When I pressed the lid down, I wasn't sure if the machine was fully closed (it was), and I had concerns about breaking it if I pressed harder.
Power cord is on the shorter end
The Our Place Rice Cooker's short power cord, combined with its clearance needs, limited placement options in testing.
Outlets in my kitchen are few and far between. This power cord is relatively short, and the rice cooker needs at least an inch of clearance on each side while staying clear of the steam vent, so it limited my placement options.
Warranty
The Our Place Rice Cooker has a one-year warranty and offers a 100-day trial.
