The Rundown
- Our favorite digital picture frames are the Nixplay 10.1" Digital Picture Frame and the Bsimb 10" Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame.
- Digital picture frames store thousands of images and play videos, reducing clutter and bringing memories to life on screen.
- Look for user-friendly models with crisp, vibrant displays and easy content uploading via apps, email, or physical media like SD cards.
The best digital picture frames can store thousands of images in a single frame, eliminating the clutter that comes with traditional frames and photo albums. Better yet, unlike their tactile cousins, the electronic versions play videos, so not only can you think back fondly on your memories, you can literally see them being played out on screen.
After researching the best-selling digital picture frames on the market, our favorite was the Nixplay 10.1-Inch Digital Picture Frame (available at Amazon) . It is sharply designed, easy to use, and most importantly, it makes the images and videos you choose to display look great.
If the Nixplay is out of your budget, the Bsimb 10-Inch Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame earned our Best Value award for serving up high-quality images at a lower price point.
The Nixplay 10.1" Digital Picture Frame is the best digital frame we tested.
If you're looking for value, the Bsimb 10" Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame is a great choice.
The Arzopa has a pretty, brassy frame, so it looks very much like something you would purchase at your local framing shop. It didn’t look totally out of place sitting on a shelf with other framed photos.
Other Digital Frames We Evaluated
How We Evaluate the Best Digital Picture Frames
We’ve tested a wide variety of digital picture frames; however, some of the products in this guide were added after our initial round of tests, based on factors such as user reviews, features, price point, and product specifications. For the frames we’ve had hands-on time with, we pulled each one out individually, downloaded the corresponding app, and used it one at a time. We then set them all outside side by side to compare the same images and test the same features. Each frame was put on a coffee table and a fireplace mantle to observe how the height difference affected the viewing angle. We tested each item’s slideshow feature, cycling through photos with the touchscreen or remote, changing the frame’s orientation, and adjusting the screen’s brightness.
Uploads were divided into three waves, if possible. The first option was a manual upload via flash drive or microSD, which included a batch of 50 photos and a single 20-second MP4 video. The second was five photos and a 15-second video sent via the Frame’s app. The final wave was emailed to the frame, along with five photos and a five-second video. Care was taken to send a mix of JPG and HEIC photos, taken with both a phone and a DSLR camera, in both color and black-and-white, and in both landscape and portrait orientations.
What to Consider When Buying Digital Picture Frames
Most digital picture frames can stand both horizontally and vertically to best serve your taste and the types of images you upload.
Digital photo frames are great gifts for friends and family members alike. Whether you intend to purchase one for yourself or for someone else, keep in mind that whatever you buy should be user-friendly for you (or the people you’re giving it to).
Below are some key factors to consider when selecting the best digital picture frame.
Price
Digital picture frames can be pricey, but they are a great way to display multiple photos in a single frame. However, you don’t have to break the bank on your purchase. Our Best Value pick, the Bsimb 10" Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame, vibrantly displays photos and has great video playback.
Spending more might get you more features and storage, but it’s important to consider whether those are necessary, especially if the picture frame is being purchased as a gift.
Dimensions
While most of the best digital frames we tested for this roundup were approximately 10 inches x 7 inches, there are larger frames available, some of which are big enough to be used as wall art. However, those will cost more.
If you want to display your photo collections on a fireplace mantle, coffee table, or end table, consider one of the frames we reviewed. Each of the frames we tested has its own stand, and most are wall-mountable with the addition of a wall-mounting kit.
Storage
They may hold thousands of images, but digital picture frames can blend in with their traditional counterparts around your home.
Most baseline digital picture frames have up to 16 GB of internal storage. That means a frame can store over 2,000 JPG photos or up to two hours of MP4 videos.
But not all frames need physical storage. Many consumers opt to play photos and videos from a flash drive or SD card plugged into the back of the frame. Advanced frames stream those same files from the cloud, so ensure that whichever one you choose has sufficient storage capacity for what you want to show.
FAQ
How Do Digital Picture Frames Work?
The best digital picture frames work by storing photos that you choose to upload through media, such as phone apps, to display them in a slideshow. Since these photos are stored in the frame, you can select the photos you want to display while offline. You can even choose how fast the photos switch in the slideshow and the order in which you want them to show.
How to Put Pictures on a Digital Photo Frame from an iPhone?
The easiest way to upload photos from your iPhone to a digital picture frame is through the frame’s app or by using its designated email address. With a Wi-Fi connection, you can upload your selected photos to the cloud through the app or simply send them to your frame's email address. For optimal results, it is recommended to purchase a frame that’s fully compatible with the HEIC file format.
