If you want to add a little bit of cozy warmth to a space without the fuss of a pellet, wood, or gas stove then an electric fireplace is your best bet. These heaters come in both freestanding and insert designs, meaning you can put them in a corner, install them in a wall, or use them as an insert in an existing, traditional fireplace.

To find the best electric fireplace inserts and those that are freestanding, we spent hours digging through hundreds of user reviews, looking over installation manuals, spec pages, and everything we could find. Our top picks offer a range of stylish designs that will suit any room, with options for all kinds of setups, whether you want an in-wall insert that doubles as an electric fireplace TV stand or a freestanding unit you can put in the corner of your bedroom or office.

Just note that like most electric heaters, these units don't produce the kind of durable heat that will keep a large room warm once they click off, but they'll add a little bit of warmth and that fiery glow to any room you need, which is great if you don’t have a wood burning fireplace in your home.

To help you find the best electric fireplace heater, we browsed various options available online. Based on our research, these are the best ones you can get right now.

Editor's Note:

The recommendations in this guide are based on thorough product and market research by our team of expert product reviewers. The picks are based on examining user reviews, product specifications, and, in some limited cases, our experience with the specific products named.

Product image of Duraflame 3D Infrared Electric Fireplace
Duraflame 3D Infrared Electric Fireplace

The Duraflame 3D Infrared electric fireplace is a stylish freestanding unit that throws a good amount of heat with an excellent-looking 3D fire effect. It’s the best-selling electric fireplace on Amazon right now with thousands of excellent reviews and videos from reviewers showing off how great the unit looks.

As with most electric heaters, we would caution not to expect it to be a primary heat source for a room. Most reviewers used it as supplemental heating to an existing heating source in a bedroom, office, or basement where its additional heat can help take the edge off and keep the room feeling cozy and toasty.

Unlike most of the electric heaters we researched, this comes in a wide range of colors to match just about any decor and features an adjustable thermostat that you can use to keep it only running when you need it. As an added safety feature it will also automatically shut off after a certain amount of time to prevent overheating.

Pros

  • Very stylish design

  • Excellent realistic flame effects

  • Plenty of heat

Cons

  • Not all metal

  • Remote doesn't always work well

Product image of Touchstone The Sideline 50-inch Electric Fireplace
Touchstone The Sideline 50-inch Electric Fireplace

The Touchstone Sideline Electric Fireplace is a great option if you want a unit that you can install into a wall or an existing fireplace surround. It comes in a huge range of sizes, from 28 inches wide up to 100 inches, and is a perfect way to add the cozy touch of a wall-mounted electric fireplace space that otherwise wouldn’t support one.

As with other electric fireplaces I wouldn’t expect a tremendous amount of heat, but it provides a soothing and adjustable flame effect, up to 1500 watts of heat, and it operates without getting overly warm and stays cool to the touch on the back and sides—perfect since you can install it right inside your wall cavity.

Though installation will be a bit trickier than with other fireplaces due to the in-wall nature of the design, this is a great option beneath a wall-mounted TV where you want a clean, modern look.

Pros

  • Looks stylish

  • Available in tons of sizes

  • 1500W Output

Cons

  • Not freestanding

  • Won't heat a large space

Product image of Xbeauty Electric Fireplace Stove Heater
Xbeauty Electric Fireplace Stove Heater

The Xbeauty Electric Fireplace Stove is a 1500-watt infrared heater with somewhat realistic flame effects in a stylish cabinet. It’s more affordable than most fireplace units we looked at, coasting little more than a high-end space heater but offering an eye-catching design that will look great in your space.

It has over 2000 positive reviews on Amazon, with the most positive ones focusing on the Xbeauty’s ability to add a bit of warmth to a space without overwhelming it. It’s not a huge piece either, with a 23-inch wide design, meaning you can put it where you might otherwise place a small space heater and enjoy a style upgrade at the same time.

Pros

  • Looks stylish

  • Freestanding

  • 1500W Max Output

Cons

  • Won't heat a large space

Product image of Ameriwood Home Farmington Electric Fireplace
Ameriwood Home Farmington Electric Fireplace

The Ameriwood Home Farmington Electric Fireplace is one of the few units that is designed to be a proper TV stand as well. Most of the electric fireplace units we found—even free-standing units designed to mimic a classic mantle—are not meant to hold up the weight of a TV. This one is, acting as a cabinet, electric fireplace, and console all-in-one.

It’s designed for TVs up to 60 inches, though we think with newer, lighter TVs you could get away with even a few 65-inch units. It only has a 23-inch fireplace insert so it’s on par with some of the smaller freestanding units in terms of heat output, but it’ll add a nice bit of warmth that is nicer than a static console. The design itself is perfect for complementing a rustic, country decor, and the fireplace will suit that nicely as well.

Reviewers generally loved this piece, the biggest issue people called out was assembly, which can be very tricky. The main issue is that you’ll likely need a second person to help hold pieces while you attach them, if you follow the instructions as written.

Pros

  • Rustic style

  • Freestanding

  • Realistic flame

Cons

  • Small 23-inch insert

  • Won't heat a large space

  • Tricky assembly

Product image of Ameriwood Home Lamont Mantel Fireplace
Ameriwood Home Lamont Mantel Fireplace

The Ameriwood Home Lamont Mantel is one of the most popular electric fireplaces we found, and it’s also easily the most epic. It’s a full-blown mantel replacement, featuring two bookshelf-style sides, a 26-inch electric fireplace in the middle, and a host of included accessories such as fake books, a fake owl, clock, and numerous other accessories.

As with the other electric fireplaces, it is only going to throw a limited amount of heat—about 4,600 BTUs—but you’re really paying for an all-in-one piece that can occupy a wall, add a touch of charm, and warm up your toes.

The main drawback with this unit is it’s not meant to support a large amount of weight, so you can’t put a TV on top of it. It’s also fairly narrow and, despite the size, it doesn’t weigh all that much. Reviewers also loved the overall design but complained that assembly was a pain and it has “approximately one billion” pieces as one reviewer wrote.

Pros

  • Highly detailed style

  • Realistic flame

Cons

  • Large

  • Tricky to assemble

  • Not meant to support a TV

Product image of R.W. Flame 36-inch Electric Fireplace Insert
R.W. Flame 36-inch Electric Fireplace Insert

The R.W. Flame 36-inch Electric Fireplace Insert is a fairly large fireplace replacement that can pop into an existing fireplace easily. It has a colorful flame effect that isn’t the most realistic but provides a nice bit of flare for your room. It offers a 1500-watt heating element and can toss a good amount of heat, though like all others we’ve looked at I wouldn’t expect it to do much more than add a nice glow and bit of coziness to your room.

Reviewers really loved this fireplace insert, especially if you have an existing cavity to fill and you don’t or can’t light up a real flame. The main drawbacks people pointed out were the remote control can be very finicky and the faux brick on the edges looks a little too fake, though you will only notice it if you really try to focus on it.

Pros

  • Multiple flame color options

  • Remote Control

  • 1500W Output

Cons

  • Won't heat a large space

  • Not freestanding
