The Rundown
- Our favorite hedge trimmers are the Ego Power+ HT2600 and the Echo HC-2020.
- Powered hedge trimmers significantly reduce trimming time, offering options like powerful gas, convenient corded, or portable battery models.
- Consider blade length, cutting capacity for branch thickness, and ergonomic features like rotating handles for comfortable, efficient use.
It’s startling how fast hedges can grow out of control. In just one season they can start to engulf anything around them, from stairs and doors to decks and sheds. Keeping them trimmed back keeps your yard looking clean and tidy and also keeps them clear of structures and other plants.
But trimming hedges can be a long, tiring process, particularly if you’re using hand trimmers and have a lot of them. A powered hedge trimmer can cut that work down to a fraction of the time, and leave your bushes and overall landscaping looking great.
Like many outdoor power tools, there are three basic types of hedge trimmers. The first is gasoline powered. These tend to be very powerful, though also extremely loud, heavier, and produce fumes.
Corded hedge trimmers run on electricity, but they need to be plugged into the house using an extension cord that you have to manage. They also tend to be the cheapest option available. Finally, battery-powered hedge trimmers give you free range to go wherever you want without tripping over cords or smelling fumes, but you’re limited to the charge time of your battery.
