Exercising is hard. Getting dressed to do it should not be.

Ever since the athleisure boom, it seems like every clothing company offers some version of a workout legging and tank top. As you sift through all the options for buying women's workout clothes online, you might find yourself asking questions like, how much do I want to spend? Is the quality good? Will this fit me? Can I return it if it doesn’t?

The variety of choice in styles, colors, and sizes can be overwhelming. To make shopping for exercise clothes hassle-free, we’ve pulled together our picks of the best places to buy it, including some of Reviewed editors' personal can’t-live-withouts.

1. Nordstrom

Nordstrom tops the list as one of the best places to shop.

Our favorites: Alo Airlift legging—$118 and Beyond Yoga Midi High-Waist Legging—$97

Sizes: XXS-XXL Prices: $$-$$$ Return Policy: No time limit

Nordstrom is one of my favorite places to shop for everything, including workout clothes, and I’m not the only one. When I asked our shopping-obsessed editors where they love to shop, Nordstrom was at the top of the list.

Fitness-specific items that our editors can’t pass up include the Alo Airlift legging—the fabric is breathable, supportive, with just the right amount of compression. Another favorite, the Beyond Yoga Midi High-Waist legging is ideal for hot yoga, with its buttery soft, not-too-thin-but-not-too-thick material and wide waistband.

Thanks to Nordstrom’s generous return policy, you don’t have to worry if an item doesn’t fit right or if the color doesn’t look the same in person as it did on the website: Returns are open-ended and easy, and Nordstrom’s number-one goal is customer satisfaction, making it one of the easiest places to shop.

2. Alo

Feel like a celebrity whether you're at yoga or brunch.

Our favorites: Legit Legging—$118 and Heat-Wave Crop Tank—$44 and Cover Tank—$54

Sizes: XXS-L Prices: $$$ Return/Exchange Policy: 30 days

While yoga-focused brand Alo is on the pricier side, you’ll feel like a celebrity when you wear it: Kylie Jenner was spotted in the Legit legging, and Gigi Hadid has been photographed in Alo gear.

One of our editors, Amanda Tarlton, who lives and breathes yoga, is also a big fan of Alo. She loves the Heat-Wave crop tank, describing it as “perfect to go from the gym to brunch.” I personally love the Cover tank, which has a trendy enough cut to pass as a crop but covers enough if you’re not ready to dive into full crop-top mode.

3. Nike

Wear these pieces for running errands or your hardest HIIT class.

Our favorites: Speed Tight—$75 and Epic Lux Tight—$95 and Performance Lightweight No-Show Socks—$20 (6 pairs)

Sizes: XS-2XL (tights), S-M (socks) Prices: $$-$$$ Return Policy: 60 days

As someone who used to work in the apparel division at Nike, I can vouch for the brand’s quality. Every piece of clothing Nike makes is held to a certain standard to ensure you’ll be satisfied.

The Nike Speed tight and Epic Lux are some of my most-loved leggings because they stay in place without being too tight and the fabric is silky-soft, making them my go-to leggings for everything from running errands to HIIT classes.

But the item I rave about most often? The Performance Lightweight No-Show socks. My former Nike coworker introduced these to me as her favorite and I haven’t bought another pair of socks since. They are the Goldilocks of socks, not too thick but not too thin, and they don’t slip down your foot—buy these immediately and you will not regret it. And if for some reason you do, Nike has a great 60-day return policy.

4. Lululemon

Workout clothes from Lululemon are tried-and-true favorites.

Our favorites: Wunder Under Tight—$98 and Sculpt Tank II—$58 and Run Times Short II—$58

Sizes: Women’s 0-14 Prices: $$-$$$ Return Policy: 30 days

Would this even be a “best activewear” list if Lululemon weren’t on here? People have been obsessed with this clothing brand for years and I can understand why. Its clothes are fashionable, functional, and high quality. This also comes with a higher price tag, but that can be worth it for those looking for investment pieces that will last.

Some of our favorites are the Wunder Under and Align tights, which are both made of soft material and have a high-rise waistband that keeps everything in without digging in. Our e-commerce editor, Courtney Campbell, loves the Sculpt Tank II and Run Times Short II, describing them as the “perfect running combo.”

5. Sweaty Betty

Credit: Sweaty Betty

British brand Sweaty Betty is the best-kept secret in fashion-forward fitness clothing.

Our favorites: Sweaty Betty Super Sculpt 7/8 legging—$110 and Cool It Hoodie—$140

Sizes: XXS-XXL Prices: $$-$$$ Return Policy: 90 days

I discovered this British brand while shopping in London years ago and was ecstatic when they finally opened shops in the U.S. If you’re looking to be an early trendsetter, you’ve landed in the right place. Sweaty Betty is like Lululemon’s more fashionable cousin, with bolder colors, prints, and silhouettes. The quality is also on par with Lululemon, as well as the price tag (unfortunately).

However, if you’re looking to treat yourself, I highly recommend the buttery-soft, stay-in-place Super Sculpt leggings—there’s some magic in there to make your bum look great—and the super-soft Cool It Hoodie, which is great as a layer for pre- and post-workout.

6. Under Armour

These basics are anything but basic.

Our favorites: Under Armour Victory Tank—$19.99 and HeatGear Armour Bike Shorts—$35 and ColdGear Run Tights—$80

Sizes: XS-XL Prices: $-$$ Return Policy: 90 days

Under Armour was founded on a single base-layer shirt, so it’s no surprise that it makes amazing basics, at a reasonable price, that just work well.

One of our editors, Amy Roberts, who is also a runner and a personal trainer, loves Under Armour for its functional pieces. Her favorites include the Victory Tank, as it’s inexpensive and comes in a ton of colors for stocking up. She raves that the HeatGear bike shorts “are just the right length, do not roll down or ride up, and prevent thigh chafing during a long run.” A staple in her winter running wardrobe, the Coldgear tights are fleecy-warm inside but don’t look or feel bulky.

7. Outdoor Voices

We love these pieces for #doingthings.

Our favorites: TechSweat Leggings—$75 and Zip Bra—$75 and Relay Shorts—$45

Sizes: Women’s XS-XL (zip bra bands XS-XL, cups A/B, B/C, C/D) Prices: $-$$ Return Policy: 90 days

You might know Outdoor Voices for its motto #doingthings. The brand is not trying to turn you into an Olympic athlete—its aim is to just get you moving, and we appreciate the gentle motivation.

One of Reviewed’s writers, Sara Hendricks, writes: “If you only buy one thing from Outdoor Voices, it should be the TechSweat leggings. These leggings seem to whisk sweat away as soon as it seeps out of my pores, so they hold up to HIIT classes and long runs. But thanks to their soft, pliable fabric, they also don’t feel like overkill for lower-impact activities like yoga and pilates.” She also loves the Zip bra and Relay shorts, for their comfort and style.

If for some reason you’re on the fence, Outdoor Voices has one of the longer return windows at 90 days.

Get these leggings and bras in a wide range of sizes.

Our favorites: Compressive High-Rise Legging—$68 and Paloma Bra—$38

Sizes: XXS-6XL Prices: $$ Return Policy: 30 days

Girlfriend Collective came on the scene around 2015 and was an almost immediate success. Its founders built the brand on ethical manufacturing and recycled fabrics—you can wear clothing made from old water bottles! And, keeping true to the millennial desire to know where and how clothes are made, the brand is all about “radical transparency”—meaning the site goes into specific detail of every part of the manufacturing process, from how the fabric is sourced to where the cut-and-sew process happens.

E-commerce writer Isabelle Kagan loves the Compressive High-Rise leggings and Paloma bra—and happy Girlfriend Collective fans agree, doling out average ratings of five stars for both items, from nearly 4,000 reviews for the leggings and 1,600 reviews for the bra. Reviewers rave that these clothes are the best they’ve owned, wearing them for many activities including running, Crossfit, and lounging around.

Another plus: Girlfriend Collective offers a wider range of sizes than most brands, from XXS to 6XL.

9. Fabletics

3 piece camo workout set

We're crushing on this three-piece set from Fabletics, too.

Our favorites: Camo Crush 3-piece outfit—$184.85 or $79.95 with membership of $49.95/month

Sizes: XXS-4X Prices: Varies depending on subscription Return Policy: 30 days

Just about everything comes in subscription form these days, and workout clothes are no exception. Reviewed’s audience development manager, Rachel Moskowitz, tried Fabletics, the Instagram-famous brand co-owned by Kate Hudson, and got some great gear with her $49.95-a-month subscription.

The two leggings for $24 were a big score for her, which she described as, “great quality, and not to mention really cute.” Another of her faves, the Camo Crush outfit, is a big hit with reviewers on the website, too, earning a 4.5 rating from over 10,000 reviews.

You can buy Fabletics clothes without a subscription, but in order to get the best prices, you need a monthly membership. If you buy a lot of workout clothes, this might be a good option for you. Just be aware: The return policy might not be as straightforward as other stores, so shop wisely.

10. Old Navy

Work out on a budget with Old Navy gear.

Our favorites: Lightweight Racerback Performance Tank—$12.99 and High-Waisted Elevate Side-Pocket Mesh-Trim Compression Crops—$24-$28

Sizes: XS-XXL, Regular, Tall, Petite Prices: $ Return Policy: 45 days

If you need some affordable workout apparel, head to Old Navy. It's a top-pick site for our budget-conscious staffers when they want to buy workout clothes without breaking the bank.

A favorite is the Lightweight Racerback Performance tank, for its comfort, lightweight, and variety of colors, and over 2,000 reviewers agree with an average rating of 4.6 stars. The best part: It’s only $13. The High-Waisted Elevate Side-Pocket Mesh-Trim Compression Crop received kudos from editor Amy Roberts for its comfortable fit and side pockets large enough to hold a phone or a running gel. The pants also come in regular, tall, and petite sizes, so those who are taller or shorter can find capris that are the correct length.
