Everything you should know about buying artwork from Redbubble

What is Redbubble?

Recommendations are independently chosen by Reviewed's editors. Purchases made through the links below may earn us and our publishing partners a commission.

From mushroom hats to moon phase pillows to Moka pot totes, Redbubble has it all. The site allows users to purchase art on a variety of different goods, from clothing to phone cases and beyond, designed by hundreds of thousands of different artists around the world.

Redbubble can be a bit intimidating, especially if you start exploring the catalog without a theme or design in mind. To help you navigate the site, we've laid out the basics of shopping there, as well as the variety of products you can find, and more.

What is Redbubble?

Redbubble is a site that allows users to purchase art from independent artists. Artists can upload their designs and customers can choose to have those designs printed on over 70 different products, from art prints to mugs and beyond. Redbubble began in 2006 in Australia and has since broadened its operation to a global audience; the site is now home to over 700,000 artists from around the world who make money on every sale through their individual Redbubble shop.

What kind of designs can you find on Redbubble and how can you narrow it down?

From fine art to frogs, you can find practically any design you can imagine at Redbubble, or start selling your own.

In terms of what products you can get that feature one of Redbubble’s artists’ designs, the options are nearly limitless. The huge catalog of art means that you can find almost anything related to pop culture, fandoms, nature, and more within the broad collection. Want spooky snake art for your wall? Artist rottenfantom has it. A comfy crew neck with a beautiful, painterly design? FrankMoth has you covered.

The art on offer ranges from simple, clean designs to whimsical, colorful pieces.

If you want to narrow down your choices, you can use the search bar to find art related to your search term. You can also sort your search by the item you want to buy, narrowing the field further. Signing up for a Redbubble account means that your order history will also be used to aggregate and recommend new art and artists to you when you revisit the "For you" section of the home page, which may also help you narrow down their selection.

In my case, the designs picked for me were based primarily on phrases and fandoms that had featured in previous purchases, rather than art styles. The "For you" page also gives you a list of artists to follow that might align more with the art styles you've searched or purchased in the past.

Express yourself with art from the thousands of Redbubble artists.

You can order everything from cloth face masks to notebooks, to tote bags and sweatshirts and to-go mugs. Almost anything you want emblazoned with the design of your choice. The art prints on offer vary, from regular card stock options like the "Chrysanthemums in November" art print to bigger, more expensive canvases with your design. Stickers like "The Coffee" tarot sticker are a popular choice, as well as clothes like hoodies and crew necks. Tote bags are also popular, and in the last few years Redbubble has broadened its mask selection.

How does Redbubble protect and support artists?

Redbubble's artists get paid with every purchase you make at Redbubble. Essentially, when you buy a product on Redbubble you're paying the base price for the item itself, plus the artist's margin. The artist's margin amounts to a percentage of the base price for each purchase, which is typically 20% of the base price; depending on the item, some artists will impose markups from the typical set margin.

If you buy a piece through Redbubble with a sale, or through a bulk discount if you purchase multiple items, the artist's margin will go down, since discounts reduce the base price of the items on offer.

Signing up to be an artist on Redbubble is fairly simple, and can be completed through the regular sign-up page. In order to be paid monthly, Redbubble's artists have to meet the Artist Payment Threshold of $20 per month in sales. Otherwise, they'll be paid at the end of the year in December.

Redbubble also has anti-piracy clauses and watermark features so that artists' designs are difficult to appropriate, and makes a point of noting that it protects the intellectual property of the artists in the Redbubble roster. In order to avoid potential intellectual property issues (for the artists and the potential external IPs that could be infringed on), Redbubble also has a program wherein artists that want to engage with fan art and fandom can have their work recognized and licensed by the brands with the rights to the IP in question. You can check out the Fan Art page to learn more about the brands that work with Redbubble.

How can you order with Redbubble?

Ordering from Redbubble is as easy as browsing through the designs on offer and selecting the items you want. Not all designs can be printed on all the various goods you can buy, as the artists set the terms of what art can be printed on which items. Once you have your pieces picked out, you can buy them through your shopping cart. I've ordered with Redbubble quite a few times, and can vouch for the fast shipping times and quality packaging. Art prints will come in cardboard or card stock envelopes.

Right now, Redbubble is having a sale to celebrate their fifteenth anniversary. When you use the code BIGONEFIVE, you can get 15% off of every purchase you make through the site.
