About the Layla Kapok Pillow

This Layla pillow is made for adjustable comfort, and smells fresh out of the package so you don't have to wait for it to air out before you use it.

  • Fill: Shredded memory foam blended with natural kapok fibers
  • Cover: Poly-viscose with CuTEC copper-infused yarn for cooling and moisture-wicking
  • Firmness: Adjustable
  • Sizes: Queen (18" x 28") and King (18" x 34")
  • Price: $109–$129 per pillow, but you can bundle two for less
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US certified foam

The pillow ships compressed in a box and features a zippered cover that lets you add or remove fill to customize the loft and firmness to your liking. That adjustability is the pillow's defining feature, and, as I found out, its biggest learning curve.

How We Tested

As a stubborn side sleeper with chronic shoulder and back pain, I’ve learned that between a desk job and regular workouts, one bad night of sleep can derail my entire week. Oftentimes, I stack two pillows underneath my head for extra support. For two weeks, I paid close attention to support, temperature, alignment, and how my body felt.

What we like

Adjustable fill that works for almost every sleeper

The Layla Sleep Kapok Pillow lets you adjust the amount of filling in your pillow to get your comfort level just right.

Out of the box, the Layla Kapok is stuffed almost too generously. As someone who loves a fluffy, supportive pillow, I appreciated the initial loft, but it was too much. The next night, I easily adjusted the pillow. I unzipped it and removed about three handfuls of fill. By the third night, after taking out a bit more, it was juuuuuust right.

The pillow's adjustability makes it versatile for all sleepers. Stomach sleepers tend to do best with roughly half the fill removed for a flatter profile. Back sleepers generally land around three-quarters of the way full. Side sleepers often prefer it at a higher volume, where the higher loft keeps the head and neck properly supported.

Real relief for shoulder and back pain

My previous pillows were Nectar memory foam cooling pillows, which were decent but didn't provide enough support for my neck and shoulders through the night. After about a week on the Layla Kapok, once I'd dialed in the right fill level, the difference was noticeable. I was carrying less tension through my days, I was less restless, and my workout recovery seemed to improve.

For anyone managing pain, training hard, or sitting at a desk all day, that kind of restorative support matters more than almost any other feature on the spec sheet.

Breathability and a moldable, snuggly feel

Built for comfort, the Layla Sleep Kapok Pillow is soft and cradles your head with shredded memory foam and natural kapok fibers.

Breathability proved to be one of the pillow's biggest strengths. The shredded memory foam and soft kapok fiber blend promote steady airflow throughout the night. The copper-infused poly-viscose cover adds an extra layer of moisture-wicking comfort on the surface. The pillow also has a satisfying moldability: you can scrunch, fold, and shape it exactly where you need it.

No off-gassing odor

Memory foam pillows often arrive with an unpleasant chemical smell that requires airing out before use. The Layla Kapok had none of that. I was able to sleep on it from night one without any issue.

What we don't like

The first few nights require patience

If you're used to pulling a pillow out of the bag and sleeping well immediately, the Layla Kapok will test that expectation. Getting the fill right takes a few nights of trial and error, which can be frustrating if you're sensitive to sleep disruptions. The pillow may feel too firm right out of the box, but resist the urge to write it off. Remove some fill, test it out before a night's sleep, and adjust from there.

Cooling is adequate, but not overly impressive

Layla markets the copper-infused cover as a cooling feature, and while the pillow never slept hot, it didn't deliver the noticeable cool-to-the-touch sensation that dedicated cooling pillows offer. The Layla sleeps neutrally—comfortable, but not particularly cool. If that's a dealbreaker, it's worth browsing our full best bed pillows list at Reviewed where we break down the top cooling options alongside every other category. Or, you could just buy cooling sheets.

Warranty and trial

Layla backs the Kapok pillow with a five-year warranty, well above the industry standard of one year, along with a 120-night sleep trial and free ground shipping throughout the U.S. That's plenty of time to go through your own Goldilocks process and land on the right fill level with confidence. If you decide it's not for you, returns are hassle-free.

Should you buy the Layla Kapok Pillow?

Yes, if you have the patience

If you're looking for a comfortable pillow and don't mind a few nights of adjusting the inside fill to find the perfect fit, the Layla Sleep Kapok Pillow is a great choice.

This Layla Sleep pillow (available at Amazon) review lands firmly in the recommend column, with one condition: patience. The adjustable fill makes it a legitimate option for side, back, and stomach sleepers alike, and for anyone dealing with shoulder or back pain. The support it provides once you find your perfect fill amount can genuinely change how you feel day to day.

Just know the first night might not be your best one, and that the cooling, while not false, won't blow you away if you're a super hot sleeper. Give it a week, commit to the adjustment process, and you may find it's exactly the pillow you didn't know you needed. Your shoulders will thank you.
