A couple weeks ago I told you that Alexa could one day be in every room in your home, and that day is rapidly approaching. Today, smart home startup Ecobee made real its rumored Ecobee4 smart thermostat with Alexa built-in, but the company also did one better.
Thermostats aren't in every room of your home, but there is one gadget that is—the light switch. And so in addition the first Alexa-powered smart thermostat, Ecobee also announced the first smart light switch with Alexa built-in.
Both products offer all the features you'd expect of Alexa from the Amazon Echo. The Ecobee4 looks almost identical to its predecessor, the Ecobee3, with the exception of a familiar blue light bar at the top of the thermostat. It also works with individual room temperature sensors like the Ecobee3, allowing you to balance heating and cooling throughout your home.
And of course, you can control the thermostat from your phone with the Ecobee app and connect it to Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and IFTTT. Oddly enough, this thermostat is also now the first Alexa-enabled device to work with Apple HomeKit.
The Ecobee smart light switch has fewer details. It will have a speaker, microphone, and small blue light bar, as well as sensors to detect room occupancy and daylight, but that's all we know.
The Ecobee4 is available for pre-order online today for $249, and will formally go on sale May 15th. But the Ecobee smart light switch won't be available until sometime later this year.
