It's a great time to buy a dishwasher. With so many excellent new models on the market, choosing the right one for your needs might seem overwhelming. That's why we performed in-depth testing on the most popular dishwashers, from budget to high-end.

Electrolux impressed with an all-new lineup of affordable dishwashers that clean well, look great, and are easy to use. Samsung's new WaterWall uses a unique new design that's unlike anything else out there, and KitchenAid's new filter washes away food scraps so they don't stick to your dishes.

Among some tough competitors, a few products stood head and shoulders above the rest. These are the best dishwashers of 2014.

Best Dishwasher of the Year

Electrolux EI24ID50QS

Electrolux EI24ID50QS

Electrolux debuted an all-new dishwasher design in 2014, replacing a lackluster lineup with some first-rate products. The flagship EI24ID50QS does an outstanding job cleaning dishes. It also features silicone stemware holders, jets that wash the insides of bottles, and a circular spray arm for even coverage. With a sleek, plain front and LED lighting inside, it feels luxurious, too. (Est. price: $899)

Runner-up: GE Profile PDT760SSFSS

GE relaunched its dishwasher lineup last year, and the high-end PDT760SSFSS is still a great choice. It cleaned dishes well in our tests, and also sports features like Bottle Wash jets and a color LCD display. If you don't need a third rack, the similar PDT750SSFSS is a great value. (Est. price: $1,499)

Best Value Dishwasher

Frigidaire Gallery FGID2474QF

It's no surprise that the FGID2474QF won our Best Value award. Frigidaire is owned by Electrolux, and this dishwasher is based on the Best of Year Electrolux EI24ID50QS. It lacks a few luxurious touches, but still does a magnificent job getting dishes spotless. We're also fans of its easy-to-clean stainless exterior and the option to dry dishes using either a heating element or a fan. (Est. price: $599)

Runner-up: Kenmore 15113

If price is your main concern, the Kenmore 15113 is a fine choice. It's one of the least expensive dishwashers on the market, but it still features a sanitizing rinse and a rinse cycle. This Kenmore is sparse on features and takes a long time to clean, but it gets the job done. (Est. price: $349)

Best Compact / Portable Dishwasher

Kenmore 14652

Kenmore 14652

Not every kitchen has a spot for a built-in dishwasher. If remodeling is out of the question, a portable dishwasher will do the trick. The Kenmore 14652 is a good choice. It's only 18 inches wide, which means it can fit in all but the most cramped kitchens. A work surface on top adds extra counter space, it connects to your kitchen sink, and cleaning performance is on par with built-in models.

If you're tempted to keep on hand washing, consider that a dishwasher not only does a better job cleaning—it also uses far less water. Dishwashers continuously recycle water during a cycle for efficiency, and the Kenmore 14652 only uses about four gallons of water for each cycle. Hooking up a portable washer is simple—it clips onto nearly any faucet and drains into the kitchen sink. It's certainly easier than doing dishes by hand after every meal. (Est. price: $539)

Best Innovation in Dishwashers

Samsung WaterWall

Samsung's new WaterWall dishwasher lineup isn't just a new innovation—it's a whole new kind of dishwasher. Unlike most dishwashers, which spray water onto dishes with a rotating wash arm at the base of the machine, Samsung's new WaterWall wash arm is motorized, and moves back and forth as it sprays. That lets it spray water in all four corners for better coverage. (Est. price: $1,079–$1,599)

Best Dishwasher Feature

KitchenAid Ultra-Fine Filter

Many modern dishwashers use filters to trap food scraps, keeping them from spraying back onto your dishes or clogging drains. When a filter doesn't do a good job, some of those food scraps can end up getting sprayed onto your otherwise-clean dishes—a phenomenon known as redeposit. Filters need to be cleaned by hand every few months, or else a dishwasher's performance will start to suffer.

Until now.

This year, KitchenAid debuted the Ultra-Fine Filter on the KDTM354DSS dishwasher. As its name suggests, the new filter uses an ultra-fine stainless steel filter that reduces redeposit and doesn't need to be cleaned by hand. The new filter did well in our lab tests, and we're hoping to see it available on more KitchenAid models in the future. (Est. price: $1,099–$1,199)
