Govee sent us this large (21-inch) circular ceiling light, which includes a mount and accessories, to replace an existing lighting fixture.
What makes it unique is more than 600 RGBIC LEDs—red, green, and blue lights with independent control—that form a matrix visible to anyone in the room. As such, it can create a myriad of colorful lights or light patterns, even animated ones, along the bottom of the light, to create personalized décor for whatever room you mount it in. Many of the effects are handled through the Govee companion app, but you can use your voice with an Alexa or Google smart speaker (or Apple HomePod, too, through its Matter support).
The light is also bright at up to 5000 lumens (at 6500K), but it can be tweaked to deliver other white variants, depending on your tastes.
Worth mentioning is a backlight feature that illuminates a few inches around the light fixture, too. Other features include timers, automated lighting modes (set it and forget it), and music syncing.
How we tested
Installing the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra was a cinch. The instructions were clear and concise.
The light was simple to install and came with clear instructions. We placed it in a spare room, since the light fixture there seemed easier to replace than in other rooms in the home.
If you're replacing an existing light or fixture, you'll first turn off the power to the room through your electrical panel. Then remove the old fixture, secure the base plate to the ceiling, and hang the new light with its integrated lanyard to the base plate. This makes it easier to connect the wires instead of trying to hold the 9.2-pound light on a ladder with one hand and connect the wiring with your other.
I didn't need to use a wire cutter to strip the new wires, as everything was already at the ideal length. Twist the black and white wires together with what's already in your ceiling, and either use the provided wire nuts to secure them or snap the wires together with the two connector pieces included. Turn the light clockwise, flush against the base plate, to secure the plastic light cover in place, then turn the electricity back on in the room and flip your wall switch.
Let there be light.
Now you can install the Govee app and sync with the device to change colors, add animations, and more. You'll need to have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled on your smartphone.
I already had the Govee app installed, as I own the Govee Galaxy Light Star Projector 2 Pro, so I simply tapped to add a new device, and it detected it immediately.
I also connected the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra to a Google Home and an Alexa Echo Dot Max speaker.
What we like
It works as advertised
The Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is a large, bright, circular light that displays colors and features a matrix design.
Unlike the overhead lights you likely have in your rooms, the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is a large, bright, circular light that not only displays colors, as many smart bulbs/lights do, but also features a matrix design that turns your ceiling into a living, breathing canvas.
Select the style you like in the app, such as a "golden hour" sunset or a Christmas vibe, or you can generate custom animated lighting effects through voice prompts, draw a design with your finger on the app, or ask the Govee AI to generate something for you with a few words to describe what you want to see. You can also upload your own photos.
There's also a feature called DaySync, which automagically (my word) tweaks brightness, color, and color temperature throughout the day based on local time and daily living scenarios. It's all set up in the app.
Also impressive is the backlight, which spreads around the light by splashing color across your ceiling.
You don't need to be an electrician to install it
As someone who hasn't replaced a light fixture before, I wasn't sure I was up for the task. On the contrary, it couldn't have been easier.
So long as you're safe by cutting off the power to the room and using a sturdy ladder, installing the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra was a cinch. The instructions were clear and concise.
Yes, it's heavy at almost 10 pounds, so you may need to enlist someone's help if you're not comfortable or able to go up a ladder and hang the light from its lanyard to the base. But assuming you are, it took about 30 minutes in total.
Speaking of the light's weight, since I installed this on a regular ceiling and not with any beams to secure the base plate behind it, I opted to install the extra four screws for added strength, along with the five main screws (mind you, the ceiling won't be pretty if I ever take this down, but that's another story).
A quick sweep under the light cleaned up the white drywall paint that fell during installation.
The app is awesome
Govee's mobile app interface shows its AI-powered lighting customization tools that generate themed lighting effects based on user prompts and moods.
Even for those who are less than tech-savvy, the Govee app is easy to use—if the iOS version I have installed on my iPhone and iPad is any indication. My wife installed the Android app on her Samsung Galaxy S26, and it was comparable to iOS in aesthetics, flow, and features.
You can select one of the 100-plus preset lighting effects, choose a color scheme from a virtual color wheel, or play around with various animation and creation options.
It's also simple to adjust the color temperature—from 2700K to 6500K—to shift from warm evening ambiance to brighter, cooler light for daytime tasks like cleaning.
What we didn't like
Images lack detail
Love the idea for the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra, and it mostly works, but don't expect detailed images across the light.
Yes, it creates an image and even animated ones across its 660 or so RGBIC LEDs, but don't expect it to be sharp.
For example, I had the AI design a Halloween theme, with an orange pumpkin, a witch, and a black cat, and it looked great on the app. But it looked "blobby" on the light itself, with patches of orange, green, and black when compared to the original image.
Again, the effect works, but don't expect much detail.
The music feature didn't work
One of the features of the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is syncing with the music you have playing in the room, such as a colorful light that allegedly pulses to the beat of your favorite tracks. Alas, I couldn't get this to work.
Rather than having a speaker itself, the ceiling light's built-in microphone should allow it to "hear" and respond to music playing in the room, which I tried with a pair of Google Nest speakers.
You should also be able to use the Govee Home app to sync the lights directly with the audio playing from your smartphone.
It's not cheap or light
I installed this on a regular ceiling and not with any beams to secure the base plate behind it, so I used the extra four screws for added strength, along with the five main screws.
While cool and unique, the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is pricey at $250.
If you want a smart ceiling light that can change colors, there are other options, but none we're aware of at this large 21-inch size that can display animations, custom artwork, or AI-generated creations.
In fact, Govee has a $49 smart ceiling light with RGBIC technology. It's a 12-inch model that can be controlled by an app or your voice (smart speaker sold separately).
Secondly, this 21-inch light weighs nearly 10 pounds. It's not a con per se, but you really need to mount this light securely to the ceiling with all available screws (and perhaps others) to ensure it's locked in place and won't fall, which could be a safety concern, too.
Warranty
The Govee Ceiling Light Ultra includes a one-year limited manufacturer's warranty that covers quality-related defects. Customers must be able to provide valid proof of purchase, such as an order number or receipt. If purchased through an authorized retailer, such as Amazon or Best Buy, after-sales support and returns are generally handled through those channels.
Should you buy the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra?
Yes, if you value various ambiance options and like to switch up moods in your home
Between its easy installation, gorgeous light and color presentation, and an app that lets you do so much with this device, it's hard to deny that the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra (available at Amazon for $249.99) is an excellent product.
Govee gets it mostly right, is perfect for many different kinds of rooms, and is ideal for those who like to change up the feel of the room based on who's there and what you're up to, from reading to doing chores to entertaining. Or just to wow your guests with all that you can do with this light via the app or your voice.
You can marvel at the animations, create an image yourself, upload a photo, or have the AI design something for you. It's fun, versatile, and practical all at the same time.
Govee has a great product here, but it would be even better if it dropped by $100.
