If you’ve had a washer or dryer fail earlier than you expected, you’ve likely asked yourself, “Should I buy a Speed Queen? Is it as good as its reputation?”

While most modern appliance brands prioritize high-tech features, Speed Queen has built a cult following by focusing on old-fashioned performance and reliability. But with a premium price tag, many homeowners wonder if Speed Queen laundry is worth it. Let’s dive into facts, based on our own lab tests of the best washers and best dryers, as well as what the retailers and service technicians say, to see if this brand truly delivers on its promise of being the most reliable washing machine on the market.

Speed Queen’s legacy in commercial laundry

Speed Queen isn’t necessarily a household name in home appliances, but it’s a giant in the world of commercial laundry. Pop into a laundromat anywhere in the U.S., and there’s a good chance you’ll see the Speed Queen badge.

That commercial legacy is exactly what appeals to many residential consumers, presuming that if it’s tough enough to handle the rigors of a laundromat, it must last forever in a home environment.

That presumption isn’t entirely wishful thinking. Speed Queen consumer appliances use many of the same components as their commercial cousins.

As for the brand’s ownership, it’s changed hands a few times over the years. While the company has been manufacturing machines in Ripon, Wisconsin, for over a century, it’s now owned by Alliance Laundry Systems.

What is Speed Queen’s reputation?

Speed Queen has a reputation for making tough, simple, and reliable washers and dryers, claiming they’ll last up to 25 years (10,400 cycles) in an average household. “Built like a tank” is a phrase you’ll find more than once across the internet. Also, the brand is almost pathologically focused on keeping its products free of high-tech features, creating a niche for itself as a go-to choice for those with a “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” credo.

Compared to many laundry appliance brands, Speed Queen has a small line-up of products. In washing machines, it offers just four top-loaders and one front-loader (with minor variations for exterior color and door orientation). The simplicity makes them easy to service, which in turn creates positive buzz among repair technicians.

Speed’s reputation is not unimpeachable, though. Its appliances are known to be expensive. Also, the aggressive wash cycles can be too rough on delicate fabrics and may prematurely damage fibers.

In the U.S. consumer appliance market, Speed Queen is a very small player. By dollar share, GE, LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool lead the pack, with Speed Queen trailing far down the list.

In fact, you won’t even find Speed Queen in most big-box retailers. Home Depot and Lowe’s—which, between the two, sell about three-quarters of all major appliances—do not stock Speed Queen. Instead, the brand relies on smaller, independent retailers (like Yale Appliance) and good word-of-mouth.

And the word of mouth is very good, far outsizing the brand’s actual market share. Speed Queen routinely tops the list for “most reliable” appliance brand from retailers and publishers. It’s beloved on the popular r/BuyItForLife subreddit, as well as other blogs and forums filled with frustrated appliance owners.

Are Speed Queens more reliable? Here’s what the data says.

The Speed Queen TR5000WN has simple, clear, well-machined controls that should be intuitive to just about everyone.

Reddit posts and second-hand accounts of “what my repair guy told me” are interesting but anecdotal.

These posts are filled with stories of service technicians praising Speed Queen and, almost invariably, tirading about Korean and Chinese-made products: notably, Samsung and LG.

Some of those brands do, in fact, suffer from poor supply chain issues, making it challenging to obtain replacement parts. But almost all of them are more technically complex than Speed Queens. They tend to have more electronics, more sensors, more features, and more moving parts.

Often, in our experience, those features add up to a better washing machine—but certainly a more complicated one to fix. And so it stands to reason that a service person tasked with repairing it will vouch for the simplest option—Speed Queen—and decry the high-tech alternatives.

Beyond anecdotes, there are solid data points to support Speed Queen’s reputation for reliability.

  • Best warranty coverage: According to the Boston-area retailer Yale Appliance, Speed Queen tops their rankings for warranty coverage in washing machines, and comes in third place for the lowest number of service calls (behind LG and GE Profile).

  • Best mechanical durability: Atlanta-based Appliance EMT named Speed Queen best in estimated first-year repair rates, with just 3.4% of units requiring a service call in their first year, praising the brand for the “best mechanical durability.”

  • Most reliable appliance brand: In a recent member survey by Consumer Reports, Speed Queen topped the list for most reliable appliance brands. Of course, Speed Queen specializes exclusively in washers and dryers, while nearly every other brand competes in multiple categories.

Pros: What we like about Speed Queen

In addition to the cycle selection dial, you can change wash temperature, load size, or opt for an extra rinse—but that’s it.

Speed Queen doesn’t just claim to be durable; it proves it through a “no-plastic” philosophy in its high-stress components.

1. Amazing warranty

Speed Queen offers an industry-leading warranty, providing 3-, 5-, or 7-year coverage (depending on the model), covering parts and in-home labor. While the standard coverage far exceeds the one-year industry norm, all models also include a lifetime limited warranty on the stainless steel wash basket and outer drain tub.

2. Mechanical simplicity

By avoiding touchscreens, an excess of digital sensors, and other complex features, Speed Queen eliminates the most common points of failure found in modern high-efficiency machines. The simplicity also makes them easy to repair.

Cons: What we don’t like about Speed Queen

Durability is a powerful “Pro,” but it comes with specific trade-offs in cleaning performance and resource efficiency.

The machines are tough on clothes

The stainless steel wash tub comes with a lifetime guarantee.

You might think that aggressively powerful wash cycles would equate to top-tier stain removal, but that’s not our experience. In our lab tests, the Speed Queen TR5’s stain-removal results were merely average. Furthermore, the aggressive 210-degree stroke of the “Classic Clean” cycle can be harsh on fabrics. Fast-fashion from strip-mall clothing brands often uses lower-quality fabric and poor stitching. The intense mechanical action of a Speed Queen may cause premature wear.

High water and energy consumption

Speed Queen top-load washers rely on a traditional deep-fill wash rather than high-efficiency sensors, making it a “dinosaur” in utility costs. These machines can use over 40 gallons of water per cycle—nearly triple what an efficient front-loader consumes. In addition to any environmental concerns you may have, that is guaranteed to raise your water bill.

The final verdict: Is Speed Queen laundry worth it?

Ultimately, the answer to “Is Speed Queen good?” depends entirely on your priorities.

Generally, Reviewed does not recommend Speed Queen in most head-to-head comparisons. Within the last couple of years, we’ve often recommended LG as the best balance of price, features, and reliability.

However, Speed Queen has its rightful place for consumers. If you want a “buy-it-once” appliance, Speed Queen is the most reliable washing machine investment you can make.

FAQ

Is Speed Queen laundry worth it for the high price?

While the upfront cost is high, Speed Queens are expected to outlive other brands, bringing the average annual cost down. If it lasts the promised “25 years” of domestic service, that would make it significantly cheaper than models that fail within the 6–8-year range.

Is Speed Queen good for delicate clothes?

Speed Queen washers are built for heavy-duty cleaning. If you wash many delicates, the TR series (Perfect Wash) is better than the TC5, but both are less gentle than a high-efficiency front-loader.

How long is the Speed Queen warranty?

The Speed Queen warranty offers 3, 5, or 7 years of full parts and labor coverage, depending on the model, far superior to the industry-standard 1-year warranty.
