Amazon has been on a mission to make purchasing products as frictionless as possible. And soon it may be able to get you to make purchases without even thinking about it.
Amazon's trojan horse is its Dash Replenishment Service, which is being built into smart products like printers and pet food dispensers, allowing them to automatically order new supplies when they run low. But GE and Whirlpool are also integrating the service into washers and dryers.
Now Whirlpool has announced that owners of its smart top-load washers and dryers will be able to take advantage of Dash integration in 2016.
With the DRS integration, the machines will automatically order more detergent, dryer sheets, and Affresh washer cleaner when they're running low. The appliances determine when they need to order more supplies based on the number of cycles they've run since the last order.
Unfortunately, the feature has yet to be announced for the company's smart front-load pair.
It remains to be seen just how popular DRS-enabled products will become, but for now, it doesn't look like Amazon is having any problems getting manufacturers on board.
