The year 2020 didn't exactly go as any of us expected—and how you feel about that is up to you. But if your beloved household pet could voice their opinion, they'd probably have no qualms about staying in 2020 forever. Shelters and rescue organizations saw upward surges in adoption from March onward, which means more animals have homes now than before—plus, humans are home more, which means more walks, more belly scratches, and more attention.
Whether you've just gotten a dog or cat or simply want to treat the one you've had for a while to some new gear, you'll find something on this list. Each item, from collars to leashes to pet carriers, earned a gold star from our pet-owning testers—and we think you and your pet will love them, too.

Clipping a dog's nails can be stressful for all parties involved, but the Epica Professional Pet Nail Clippers make it easier. These scissor-style nail clippers are more durable than any other kind we tested, and provides a quick, clean cut. They also have semi-circular blades, allowing you to see exactly where you’re cutting, and a quick guard prevents you from going too far or deep. At the price of about $10, they're a great buy. A harness—rather than a standard collar and leash—is a must-have for many dog-owners, whether your pooch tends to pull on walks, is older and need additional support, or you need to clip them securely into a seat belt in the car (a law in many states).
In our tests, the Dogline Unimax Multi-Purpose Harness emerged on top. This vest-shaped harness is made of breathable, water-resistant, machine-washable neoprene and is padded for comfort. It's easy to maneuver on and off and fits snugly without being too tight. It also has a heavy-duty D-ring on the back that provides good leverage for casual walks, giving corrections, or communicating with service dogs. Read the full review.
The Petcube Bites 2 smart pet camera may not look as spiffy as some others, but what it lacks in looks it more than makes up in features. Not only does the Bites 2 give pet owners a clear view of their furry friends from anywhere via the connected app, it can chuck small treats to reward your good boys or girls for behaving when home alone and connect you to a vet in case of emergency. It even has an Alexa-enabled speaker built in for, say, ordering more treats when the stash gets low. Read the full review.
The K&H Original Bolster Pet Cot Elevated Dog Bed has a clever and durable design that's capable of supporting pets of all sizes a few inches off the ground. This provides airflow, thanks to its mesh center and raised surface, but for animals that like to "nest," it comes with a puffy, removable, wrap-around bolster. It also has sturdy, skid-free rubber feet, and is easy to assemble and disassemble—which makes it a breeze to wash, whether you're hosing it down or throwing the machine-washable cover in the laundry. The Leash Mate, a leash handle attachment designed for dog owners with arthritis or carpal tunnel, makes any kind of leash surprisingly comfortable to hold. This coupled with the brand's six-foot leash took our Best Overall spot when we tested leashes. The sturdy, reflective nylon material of the leash plus the ergonomic handle was heads and (wagging) tails over the rest. If you and your pet are going anywhere together, you'd do well to tote them in the SleepyPod Air carrier. This sleek pet carrier, which boasts a snuggly plush lining, can be adjusted to fit below the seat of an airplane—when needed for takeoff and landing—but can also be expanded, giving your fur baby a little more space to stretch out while staying contained. Its upper is made of polyester mesh and opens completely, providing excellent air circulation and easy in-out transitions. Read the full review.
No matter how big or small your pooch is, the Educator Biothane Collar should serve them well. We love that this collar includes 35 holes for a true one-size-fits-all experience—most collars only have five or six holes—and has a secure metal buckle to prevent pets from pulling them loose. It's also made of waterproof neoprene, which means it's durable, comfortable, and won't crack, fray, or mildew. Read the full review.
