For years, stainless steel has been the fashionable finish for kitchens. Although sleek and professional, it can look a bit cold. Then, black stainless came along, aiming to knock stainless off its perch. (It hasn't yet.) Now, two luxurious finishes are poised to ascend.

Finally, a white kitchen that doesn't look cold. The bronze hardware glows against the Matte White range and French door fridge.

The GE Appliances Café brand has launched a suite of appliances in Matte Black and Matte White. Unlike old fashioned blacks and whites, these matte finishes rock a subtle sheen that brings designer style to the kitchen. They are somewhat reminiscent of GE's stony Slate, and integrate easily into contemporary kitchen spaces.

New hardware finishes are brushed to coordinate with the matte finishes on the appliances. From left, Brushed Copper, Brushed Bronze, Brushed Black, and Brushed Stainless.

Buyers can personalize each appliance’s look by choosing between four custom hardware finishes—brushed bronze, brushed black, brushed stainless, and the standout brushed copper. The latter is the line’s signature metal, and it appears on every handle, regardless of color, as a small “cuff.” That’s a nice detail, since mixing metals is stylish, but also because the brushed copper evokes a chef's copper cookware. The metallic hardware glows like jewelry against the matte finishes. It also complements modern faucets and cabinet pulls.

As far as price range goes, the Café collection is aiming for the upper end of the mass market, a step below the high-end luxury of Wolf-SubZero products. The new Café products seem to land in roughly the same ballpark as current GE Café appliances. For example, Reviewed’s favorite 2018 refrigerator, the GE Café CFE28TSHSS sells for close to $3,000 today, and the matte finish fridges retail at about the same price point.
