The Pacific Coast 3-Chamber Goose Feather and Down Bed Pillow is a medium-support pillow designed for side and back sleepers. Its goose feather and down fill is RDS- and Oeko-Tex-certified, ensuring responsible sourcing and freedom from harmful chemicals.

Pacific Coast Feather Company, founded in 1884, makes pillows and comforters (we've also reviewed its feather and down comforter) and specializes, as the name suggests, in down products. Through acquisitions and changes in ownership, the brand has continued to produce feather (and non-feather) bedding for consumers, other brands, and hotels, reflecting the heritage behind its tagline, "Experience hotel-level comfort at home."

The 3-Chamber Goose Feather and Down Bed Pillow comes in standard, queen, and king sizes. (All three sizes come in two-pack bundles; the king-size pillows, the ones we tested, are available only as a two-pack.) The pillows are machine-washable, and they arrive beautifully packaged. You'll need to remove them from their vacuum-sealed bags and fluff them before use.

How we tested

Two people, multiple sleep positions, and weeks of nightly use helped put this pillow to the test.

To put the Pacific Coast pillow through its paces, we used it in its natural habitat: as our primary sleeping pillow for several weeks.

We're both primarily side sleepers who normally use firm memory foam pillows at night. We tracked how well we slept, how the pillow felt when we first went to bed, how it felt during any night wakings, and how it looked and felt in the morning. We compared notes on how supportive the pillow felt at different times and in different sleeping positions, evaluating it for comfort, firmness, height, and odor over time.

What we like

It keeps its shape better than any down pillow we've tried

A layered design is the secret behind this pillow's unusually long-lasting loft.

Pacific Coast says its three-chamber construction, which layers outer chambers of down on the top and bottom of an inner chamber of feathers, gives you the best of both worlds.

Because the pillow's inner chamber is stuffed with feathers, the pillow offers firm support. But since all the airy down sits closest to your head, you get the lofty, super-soft feeling that down pillows are known for. We found the pillows were dramatically less prone to collapse than other down pillows we've tried, yet they still had the signature sink-in comfort that gives them that characteristic hotel-pillow feel.

That made for longer-lasting comfort, too. In our experience, other down pillows slowly deflate overnight or with use, so even pillows that feel completely comfy at first fall flat, literally, over time. Not the Pacific Coast pillow.

While it couldn't maintain its full depth through a whole night's sleep (more on that below), it vastly outperformed other down pillows, and even other polyfill pillows we've tried, maintaining a comfortable, supportive depth and firmness that performed almost as well as a super-firm foam pillow, but with the luxurious softness of down.

No pokes

Keeping the feathers in a separate center chamber has a second benefit: It eliminates a major downside of cheaply made (and sometimes not-so-cheaply made) down pillows—unexpected, unpleasantly sharp pokes from rogue feather quills.

While we haven't tested the Pacific Coast 3-Chamber pillow long enough to evaluate how well this holds up over time, other down pillows we've tested started sprouting breakthrough quills almost immediately. During our testing period, neither of us felt a single unexpected feather jab to the face or scalp, making for a much more pleasant sleeping experience.

No feather smell

Some down pillows have an unmistakable feather smell. It's usually faint, but for some people (including one of us), it's pronounced and so gamy that it completely ruins the experience.

We're happy to say the Pacific Coast pillows had no trace of that smell, even when we held them directly to our faces and inhaled deeply, and even after multiple weeks as our primary pillows, wet hair included. (Dampness can accentuate a feathery smell.) If scent is a driving concern for you, this pillow is a good option.

It's machine-washable

Our pick for best down pillow, the Brooklinen Down Pillow, is dry-clean only, as are many down pillows, which makes keeping them clean a pricey hassle.

You can machine-wash the Pacific Coast pillow in cold water on the gentle cycle (provided your washer is capacious enough to fit it) and tumble-dry it on low heat. Being able to wash your down pillows at home saves time and money, and it's a major advantage over most other down pillows.

What we don't like

May still be too soft for committed side sleepers

As much as we appreciated the 3-Chamber pillow's firmness compared with competing down pillows, it simply can't match a foam pillow's consistent support over long stretches of sleep.

If we woke during the night, we both occasionally found it more comfortable to switch to a firmer foam pillow to fall back asleep on our preferred side. This might not be an issue for back sleepers or sound sleepers, but for side sleepers who want a lot of support, the Pacific Coast down pillow may lose depth through the night.

Warranty

The Pacific Coast 3-Chamber Goose Feather and Down Bed Pillow, like most Pacific Coast products, is covered by a 180-day return policy. Unwashed pillows without stains or damage qualify for free returns with no restocking fees.

Should you buy the Pacific Coast 3-Chamber Goose Feather and Down Bed Pillow?

Yes, if you love the feel of a down pillow but want more support

Despite being primarily foam-pillow sleepers, both testers found a lot to like about this down alternative.

The Pacific Coast 3-Chamber Goose Feather and Down Bed Pillow (available at Pacific Coast) is a massive upgrade over other down pillows we've used, on almost every front.

Despite its soft, luxurious sink-in feel, it was more supportive and held its shape longer. And it avoided the usual downsides of other down pillows (feather pokes, feather smell).

While it may not offer quite enough all-night support for side sleepers, we think feather pillow fans, and even skeptics, will find a lot to love in this pillow.
