Juicing is one of the hottest health fads to hit the fitness world in decades, with juice bars even taking up residence right inside local gyms. But juicing at home can be messy and time-consuming. That prompted one American family, the DesJardins, to do something about it.
They've taken to Kickstarter with a machine that's essentially the Keurig of juicers, called Nutralux.
According to DesJardin LLC's Kickstarter campaign page, the Nutralux creates single servings of juice from large, recyclable "Nutrapods." You can either fill the pods with fruits and vegetables yourself, or buy them pre-packaged.
The juicer also lets you choose how much pulp you want in your juice, with maximum, medium, and minimum settings. Depending on the setting you choose, the juicing process will take 90 seconds, 60 seconds, or 30 seconds, respectively.
There's also a reusable, dishwasher-safe pod made of stainless steel, if you don't want to buy the single-use pods. And as for cleanup, the only part of the machine you have to wash (other than the stainless-steel pod) is the blade, which only needs to be rinsed off.
The DesJardins are looking to raise $65,000 to produce the Nutralux juicer, with backers expected to receive the first units in November 2016. You can currently preorder the juicer for $249, and your order will also come with one stainless-steel reusable pod and six recyclable pods—a savings of $100 over the expected retail price.
The company says its goal is to sell recyclable pods for well under 50 cents each, while prepackaged pods are estimated to cost $2.50 to $5 per pod, depending on the ingredients involved. It's still unclear whether the pods will be sold in-store or only online.
As with Keurig coffee machines, it will probably be a lot cheaper to use a conventional juicer than the Nutralux. But for people who want a simpler, quicker solution with less cleanup, the Nutralux appears to offer a compelling package.
