The pillow arrives at its full 7-inch height with all four layers inside. You can slide layers in or out to adjust the loft and feel. I had no trouble adjusting it.
Prefer a more traditional shape? Layla also makes the classic BioCrystal Pillow with all the same technology, including the 16-crystal infusion, CrystalCore cooling, and four adjustable layers. It just skips the curve. The rectangular design adjusts from 4 to 6 inches and is built for people who regularly sleep on their backs or stomachs. It costs $179 and is also currently $40 off. I tested the side sleeper version.
How we tested
I'm a side sleeper. I deal with shoulder and back pain, and I'm a restless sleeper who moves around a lot through the night. Before this, I was sleeping on the Layla Kapok. For one month, I paid close attention to temperature, support, alignment, and how my body felt in the morning.
What we like
Cooling that fixes the Kapok's weak spot
My one real complaint about the Kapok was temperature. It slept neutral but never cool. The BioCrystal Side Sleeper is cool to the touch, but not so cold that it feels like an ice pack against your face. It holds a steady, pleasant temperature all night long.
For once, my pillow was something I never thought about. No flipping to the cool side and, worst of all, no waking up sweating.
A curved shape that works for side and back sleeping
The curvature is the star here. The U-shaped cutout let my shoulder tuck in naturally. It's especially comfortable if you sleep in more of a spooning position.
The bigger surprise was back sleeping. This is the first pillow I've ever found comfortable for sleeping on my back. My head and shoulders relaxed evenly into the pillow, and I felt solidly supported without sinking in.
That even support paid off in an unexpected way. I often woke up on my back instead of my side, and the shoulder pain I used to feel on both sides has decreased.
Foam layers beat a bag of fluff
The foam inserts slide in and out of the cover in seconds, with no shredded fill to store afterward.
I hate dealing with pillow filling. Yes, the shredded fill in the Kapok and many other adjustable pillows lets you customize the feel. But am I really supposed to store a bag of fluff forever? That's been my problem with every adjustable pillow I've tried. I now have three bags of leftover fill sitting in a bin because I'm afraid to throw them out.
The BioCrystal's removable inserts slide out easily and fold up flat. You can store extras wherever you already keep your bedding, right alongside your spare pillowcases.
Adjusting is also much faster. I removed one layer after the first night, and that was my entire adjustment period. Compare that to the few nights of trial and error I've had with other pillows.
Whether you like a thick pillow or a thin one, you can find your fit in seconds and move on with your life.
A calmer, more relaxed night
Layla says the 16 crystals infused throughout the foam support relaxation and stress relief, citing testing from the BION Institute. I'm not a sleep scientist, so I can't speak to how that works—but I can say I felt more relaxed sleeping on this pillow. Whether that comes from the crystals, the steady temperature, or simply better support, my nights felt calmer.
No off-gassing odor
Like the Kapok, the BioCrystal had no chemical smell out of the box. I slept on it from night one without issue.
What we don't like
It's heavier than most pillows
The foam layers give the BioCrystal some real heft, which helps keep it in place through a restless night.
The foam layers have some real weight, and some sleepers may find them cumbersome when repositioning. I see it as a plus. As a restless sleeper, I find that a little weight keeps the pillow, and me, grounded and in place.
The price is steep
Even on sale, this is a premium pillow. If you can get by on a regular pillow, it's a big spend. But your health and peace of mind come first. If you've struggled with pain, heat, or a pillow that never feels quite right, it's money well spent. After all, we spend about a third of our lives in bed.
Warranty and trial
Layla backs the BioCrystal Side Sleeper Pillow with a five-year warranty, well above the one-year coverage many pillows carry. It also comes with a 30-night sleep trial. That's the same coverage as the Kapok, and plenty of time to decide whether it's right for you.
Should you buy the Layla BioCrystal Side Sleeper Pillow?
Yes, especially if you're a side sleeper
A curved shoulder cutout and steady cooling made this pillow a favorite for side sleeping and, surprisingly, back sleeping too.
The Layla BioCrystal Side Sleeper Pillow (available at Layla) lands firmly in the recommend column. It takes everything I liked about the Kapok, including adjustable support and pain relief, and fixes what I didn't. It sleeps cooler. It adjusts in seconds, not nights. And it skips the bag of fluff entirely.
It's heavier and pricier than a basic pillow, but for side sleepers, back sleepers, and anyone managing shoulder pain, it's worth it. If you mostly sleep on your back and want a traditional shape, the classic BioCrystal Pillow gives you the same tech without the curve. I still like my Kapok. I just don't sleep on it anymore. The BioCrystal has become my favorite pillow, so much so that I even take it to the couch for naps.
