The same complaint has haunted air beds for decades: you can dial in firmness precisely, yet they support your shoulders, knees, and hips as one undifferentiated mass. The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux is the company's answer. We haven't tested it yet, but it's the most substantive smart bed news of the year.

Japanese joinery beds are beautiful and generally cost $2,000 to $4,000. We tested the FlexiSpot Kana earlier this year, priced at $900, and were seriously impressed.

The solid wood frame assembles with interlocking joints using a mallet and no hardware, and it supports 1,200 pounds without a box spring underneath. Woolroom pioneered machine-washable wool bedding back in 2008, so this one goes in the wash like anything else. Every piece carries a Wool ID QR code that traces the fiber back to the farm and flock it came from—it's the only protector we've seen with a traceable supply chain.

Buying a pillow is a gamble—what cradles your head and neck at the store can deflate after a week at home. Firmer memory foam pillows can leave you sweating after a few hours. However, the Layla Kapok Pillow unzips so you can take the fill out or put it back in, and the fill itself—shredded memory foam blended with natural kapok fibers—molds to your shape instead of springing back.

When it comes to sheets, certification by the Egyptian Cotton Association matters because it indicates pure, unblended cotton, DNA testing (yep, you read that correctly) to ensure the fibers grew in the Nile River Valley, and extra-long-staple fibers, which resist pilling. Pure Parima is one of the few U.S. brands that holds this certification.

This set is made from 100% extra-long-staple Giza cotton spun and woven on air-jet looms for a finish with real sheen and a weighted, liquid drape.

During our sateen sheet testing, these rose to the top of the field.

Details like 18-inch deep pockets with corner straps, envelope-closure pillowcases, triple-embroidered stitching on the flat sheet and cases, and OEKO-TEX certification hold up. At $350, they're not cheap, but they land well below the luxury imports they compete with.

For an ultra-soft sateen sheet set at a more palatable price, we love the Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Sheets, which the brand released this year after spending more than three years reformulating its best-selling Luxe Sateen.

Brooklinen boosted its thread count to 495, used finer, stronger long-staple cotton yarns, and employed a proprietary finishing process that delivers out-of-the-box softness rather than requiring you to wash your way to it. As we're currently sleeping in a set, we can confirm they're intensely soft.

The sheets are certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and the finish reads low-sheen rather than glossy, which is what most people want from sateen. At $195 for a queen, they land well under our top pick. The one real tradeoff is the fitted sheet's 16-inch pocket—a deep pillowtop with a topper on it will be a stretch. For everyone else, this is the sateen set to buy.

Riley Home weaves its percale sheets in Portugal from 100% long-staple combed cotton in a true one-over, one-under percale, finished matte rather than lustrous. Hohenstein also certifies them to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Combined, these are two valuable assets in a field where prices climb fast, but Riley's set lands around $200.

The shell uses 100% Australian cotton, and independent IDFL testing gave it the highest downproof rating of 5, with only 2 particles escaping or protruding during the rotating-tumble test. During our sleep trial, the fill stayed in the comforter and off our sheets, with no jabs. The interior blend of 60% white goose feather fiber, 35% down fiber, and 5% goose feathers delivers loft without the quills that make conventional feather bedding a hazard.
